Turbo Noise?

Unread post by Clareat »

Hi new member here I run a 1996 Xantia 1.9TD, now the query I apologise if this has been posted before. At above 2250-2500 revs a whisling noise starts appearing in conjunction with the turbo kicking in, the turbo operates as normal and the car pulls strongly as normal can anyone help with this problem

I have had noisy ones and quiet ones, even a noisy one that became quiet when the motor warmed up, I think clouds of smoke are symptoms of knackered turbo (and rampant oil consumption) and I would not worry unduly if lubrication servicing has been properly looked after.

Could it be the intercooler pipework leaking?

My Xantia does it all the time when i put my foot down, the harder i accelerate, the more pronounced it is.Almost to the point that it sounds like a proper turbo car(cosworth etc)I also had a td Rover 200 brand new, that was the same. Some td`s tend to be quiter, almost as if turbo isnt working.I dont think its anything to worry to much about. As long as oil consumption is fine, and it dosent smoke excessively.

I also have a 'whistler' but she seems to pull well, doesn't use oil and doesn't smoke (wish that all applied to me [:)]). As Derek suggests, I'd often wondered if I have an air leak somewhere. Are there any parts that frequently fail (gaskets, pipes, joints etc)?

My experience of turbo whistle has been that it is caused by a leaky exhaust. Both times when I've had turbo whistle (or whistle that got worse) it was caused by leaks or holes in the exhaust.
If no leaks are apparent, the joint between the turbo and the downpipe is a prime candidate for a difficult to detect leak.

Kowalski is almost certainly right. My TZD stopped whistling once the manifold joint was tightened up. ('Twas a good bit quieter, too!)

Thanks for all the info, there is no excessive oil use or heavy smoke other than sooty injectors which I am changing this week, I guess its something I will get used to.
ps; clutch cable snapped on sunday what a hell of a job that was to do
