I give up !

Unread post by wotsupnow »

My facelift 1.9td 1998 only spins offside fan when it exceeds 100deg.
I've gone through the circuit and it matches the Haynes one, if I power the relays the fans work correctly so its got to be either the Bitron or the wire to the single relay for the offside fan. Haynes says Bitron is under headlight on nearside but I can't find it, I don't even know what it looks like which may help. This car has been a nightmare.............
Bought last year for £1300 ( could have been a bargain )
Xmas the immobilisor on the injection pump packed in and whilst the pump was off it was rebuilt as the pressure was low ( scored inside )
so that along with cam belt/water pump/tensioner whilst its stripped added £1000 to the 'value'.
Last month the rad started leaking so that's another £100 + about £30 of antifreeze .......
MOT cost £200 as it chose to permanently lock the fuel cap cover and the front brake pipes where crumbly.
I've also replaced drop links and front spheres another £ 100
aux belt looks like it needs changing now and of course there's these fans to get going again.

I used the search facility for Bitron. It returned many previous threads where the word Bitron existed.
http://www.andyspares.com/discussionfor ... IC_ID=2425 actually describes what a Bitron looks like. Try a search on Bitron yourself and you might find more useful information
Hope this helps

Kered, I have searched and the thread you refer to says it's both a black box and a white box.........
Richard, are you saying it's in the ecu box as that's the only black box I have behind OS h'light.
there is a small box on N/S inner wing but that has two thick pink wires on bolts at one end and multi connector at t'other ( glow plug relay ? )
Someone mentioned connector in harness on an inner wing that may be corroded, I can't find that either.

Hi,
There are two multi connectors on the inner wings on the xantia, to access the n/s you have to remove the battery and the tray beneath it,you will then see it just below the fuse box with a mass of wires leading to it, the connectors have a slide type locking mechanism on them so whatever you do dont force them open, on the o/s you have to remove the ecu / egr relay and remove the black plastic box which protects them, this is secured by two 10mm bolts, once removed you will see the connector just behind the headlight unit.
The bitron is a bit of a pig to get to, its directly below the n/s headlight and tucked away in a bit of box section, you will have to remove headlight, battery and tray to make it easier to access but without removing the bumper it is near impossible to remove, you can unplug the multi connector though and again it has a slide type locking mechanism on it so be carefull that you dont break it.
When the bitron unit went on my xantia I just unplugged it and made a bracket to locate the new unit to a better location, the knackered unit is still on the car.
Hope this helps

Richard, yep in my ecu box there is a black box with sliding catch and the Bitron name embossed on it, cheers I can check out the wiring now. Oddly, the green relay in there is also made by Bitron.

Hi Pete,
The box you mention is not the bitron unit that controls the fans, it is the egr relay, look directly under the n/s haedlamp as in my description. (bitron is just a manufacturers name and you will find loads of relays / control boxes with their name on ).
