205 diesel knocking

Post by woodhead722 »

Engine sounds fine but when quite rapid acceleration is required, usually most noticable in 2nd gear, theres knocking only on acceleration.
Local garage THINKS it may be driveshaft and advised packing N/S shaft rubber with grease. However when clip was removed it was fully packed.
Intermediate ? bearing on O/S also had WD40 squirted in.
Gearbox was topped up with oil.
All gave no success.
80,000 miles 12 yr old. O/S shaft replaced 10k miles, 2 yrs ago.
Has knocked for a while now but tend to forget as its the wife's car!
Any ideas please?

Hi
Is the intermediate bearing on the o/s driveshaft lose in the engine mounts housing?
I had the bearing spinning in the mounts housing on my 405 because the mount was worn out.
It sounded like it needed a new gearbox, broken bearing sound, but we traced the fault to the engine mount & the driveshafts bearing spinning in the housing.
It made a world of difference with a new mount on it.

How about a front wheel bearing. Jack it up and give the wheel a turn.

I've given the wheels a top/bottom rock, and cannot feel any play.
Will however jack up, spin, and listen. Could this be worse under strong acceleration, but OK slowing down?
