Nearside inner tie rod replacement of dust cover

Unread post by cozza »

Hi folks,

I've replaced the offside lower arm, droplinks, inner tie rod, steering rack boot and track rod end without any real issues. I'm now on the nearside and foolishly thought it would be the same. How wrong I was!!

I got everything dismantled ok but am now struggling with figuring out the arrangement for replacing the small outer dust cover over the inner tie rod joint. I removed the old one by wiggling it out with a screwdriver and cutting it off, in order to gain access to remove the tie rod. Now I'm stuck.

I had bought boots from my local factor for doing both sides but it turned out the one for the nearside won't be needed as the inner one won't need disturbed and is in good condition. I've been back in touch with the factor and now have a boot set which includes the small outer boot/dust cover for the nearside, however I can't figure out how it's secured at the rack end.

I've recovered a large serrated washer from the old boot and cleaned it up of the old rubber. The washer is more or less the same diameter as the end of the small boot. The larger end of the boot (which is fitted up against the rack end) is rigid. Please can anybody help me?
