Espace 2.1 TD Tuning
Any tips for improving performance of 2.1TD engine in my 1994 Espace? I specifically could do with more torque for pulling our caravan.

Try VANAAKEN developments.www.vanaaken.com or 01344 777553.I had my Xantia done 2 years ago now 4 same reasons.1.9 td,before 92bhp,150lft,after 115bhp,185lft.Made a great difference.Pulls like a train now.Fuel ecom did`nt suffer,performance brill.Took about 2-3 hours.Cost £385,but if your keeping car 4 a few years,and 4 less stress on YOU while towing,its worth it.Give them a ring,they will send you a broucher 4 your car.Had mine done at 110k miles,now got 133k.

thre are several links from the main forum pages ,you will have to look under useful links on the main page .
I have a phase ll Safrane 2.2TD 97 with bosch pump .there are several basic adjustments you can make yourself but if you find the links the articles have good information and diagrams.
you can locate the boost compensator adjustment on top of the pump remove the tamperproof plug and undo the locknut then wind the torque
screw in 1.5-2 turns it takes about 5 mins to do cost absolutely nothing ,it gives you more pre boost fuel and better pulling from start,

Thats all ok if he`s capable of doing it.I my self will do anything, but drew the line at doing that.Although reading past results,it seems lots of people have gone the DIY route with good results.
On another note,once had a company 405td,somone diy`ed it.Went like stink afterwards with loads of smoke.2 weeks later,BANG,engine f#';ed.May have been a coincidence,dont know.It did have 310000m on it!!

my suggestion is to read the links first then to make up your own mind I have improved the performance of my 97 2.2TD safrane by making a few simple changes without heavy black smoke or reduced fuel consumpton, but my car has a Bosch fuel pump which is quite easy to adjust ,following the info in the Links .but all adjustments and DIY tuning are at your own risk.

The outcome of this tuning would be good to hear, We have a 2.1dt Espace in the family, but I have always disregarded tuning it. Stock it runs very low boost, the engine is all alloy with a wet liner design. Not the strongest of designs, most diesels you see have cast iron blocks. Standard output is 88bhp, awful for a 2.1dt by todays standards. There must be a reason why the stock output was so low.... (Just to compare, the 1.9 XUD turbo gets 92 bhp)
