Xantia strange wear on front brake discs

Unread post by Skull »

Whilst sorting a weep out I had my Xantia HDi up on car ramps and spotted this strange wear on my front discs showing a large unswept area on both inboard sides compared to the outboard sides :!:

I checked the service history I have from the previous owners and new discs and pads where last fitted @ 103,318 (2012) and according to my notes I changed the pads (Lucas) @ 130,840 It's now on 155,700

No mention on MoT's since and brakes seem fine so .....anything to worry about :?:

It would be good to see and compare the pads and their wear patterns from each side...

You often see this effect on the rear discs due to caliper corrosion causing the caliper body to sit at something other than a right-angle to the disc. This can be seen in a much reduced swept area, often on one side only, and the pad friction material worn in a 'keystone' shape.

I'm wondering here if the caliper is properly sitting square and flat on the hub flange for some reason - Or wear in the caliper slides allowing it to float around a bit...

It's an interesting one and bears investigation I feel... Watching with interest :D

26 NOV 17 NEW FRONT BRAKE PADS (LUCAS) @ 130,840

So these PADS have done 26,000 miles and still got 7-8 mm left on them.

I stripped the OSF down as pictured but there's very little to go on, the lower caliper guide pin has movement, but only with the pin bolt removed, before stripping there was nothing noticable either.

I've got the MoT end of May and am happy to see how they fare .....

Well MoT day has arrived, I even raised my concern about the wear pattern (and my rusty wing) with the tester but he said prior to the test if they meet the effiency level they'll pass.

No mention on the test sheet but it's got a FAIL anyway

Date tested
29 June 2023
FAIL
Mileage
158,761 miles

Repair immediately (major defects):
Nearside Track rod end ball joint has excessive play (2.1.3 (b) (i))
Nearside Front Lower Suspension arm ball joint excessively worn (5.3.4 (a) (i))
(*Only got 23K out of the 'Keypart' one I fitted in 2018 but 85% town mileage)
Offside Front Lower Suspension arm ball joint excessively worn (5.3.4 (a) (i))

Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
Exhaust has a minor leak of exhaust gases (6.1.2 (a))
Exhaust deteriorated

Ordered Motaquip Lower Ball Joint Pair £16.49
Ordered QH (Quinton Hazell) Track Rod End Pair £23.49 and then get tracking checked £35 after the MoT RE-TEST [-o<
(I will save the new front discs £30 I preemptively bought and I already have a spare set of pads).

Cheers :)

I would of said those discs are worn/very worn, new pads would work up to some point but I believe those discs are shot. So whilst doing the track end I'd definitely replace the discs, my opinion

I don't know how it wasn't a fault on the MOT, the lips on those discs are bigger than Katie Price after botox

Agreed on the discs... Not such a bad fail sheet Skull, at least you know a morning's work will see the car good for another year at least ;)

Discs have to be REALLY bad before they will cause an MOT fail. The ones on my 3008 had rusted badly on the inner faces when it was not being used much over Covid - they looked awful. However, they only warranted an advisory - but it failed as they had eaten the pad material; despite the car only having covered 7k miles since they were fitted!

It's caused by rust spreading out from the outside rim of the disc due to lack of use.
Also can be because the sliding pin gets stuck so a floating caliper doesn't press uniformly.
I've seen mechanics belt the edged of the disc to remove this rust and reuse the disc.
Or if you know a machine shop, they could smooth it for you, though the price is probably more than a new set.
why?

Mostly see this kind of rust on rear brake discs.

But i guess it can happen if you use the brakes sparingly, eg a lot of motorway driving with engine braking.
I have various repair handbooks and wiring diagrams for C5 mk1, Xantia, XM, Berlingo and C3 mk1.
I have Lexia/Diagbox (Sweden) and Servicebox/sedre

Jim - It took me 5 hours (including a quick lunch) for the Lower Ball Joints  the heat shields were very rusty/brittle (ideally I should have re-placed but managed to save them) and the amount of leverage required to undo them required a strop as I nearly pulled the offside driveshaft out of the gearbox  (I also need to reseat the rubber boots)
Skull's - strop used to stop driveshafts popping out.

I had suspicions that the Track Rod Ends weren't correct, but in my quest to impress and beat the rain I cracked on, ended up cutting it off as there was no counter-rotate socket on the bottom of the loosened ball joint and it turned out the threads are too small on the new parts #-o (Saxo maybe?)

Skull's - Old Track Rod End V new too narrow part supplied

so hopefully get them resent and finish the job ....
