C5 x7 wiring looms and features

Unread post by Dunkah »

Hi all, recently been thinking of upgrading from my 2008 c5 x7 to a newer model.
I’m seeing some nice examples out there for what seems decent prices and low mileages but all too often any particular example doesn’t quite have all the features I’ve been used to in my current c5.
I’m wondering how doable it is to swap over particular parts from my 2008 model into a later model.
Mine has sat nav with the large dash screen and I also have auto tint mirrors.
The main point I need to answer is are the wiring looms across the years and ranges of c5 all common so I can strip those parts from my car and introduce them to a car that doesn’t have them, or, are the looms not common so swapping parts in that way is just not possible.
I’m in no real rush to get rid of my car so I can wait until I see the right one for me but I’d hate to miss a really good opportunity should one arise just because it doesn’t have a couple of creature comforts.
I’m not scared of the work and am more than capable of it.
What everyone’s opinions on this?
Thanks in advance

In a nutshell No. But it depends on what you are going from and to. I.e. Exclusive to Exclusive may narrow down the work, but there will still be some to do as Exclusives over the years had different options, from no telematics units to a whole range of these that changed from 2008 onwards. Some vehicles have hands free kits build in behind the dash and others have independent telematic units, others don't. All this affects the looms and connected equipment used.

The looms are different on the X7 and there are multiple looms based on the vast options that were available. As an example, there are seven types of wing mirrors for this vehicle, with different functions, but not only that, they also rely on other ECUs dotted about the car and in the doors and seats to make things work, so just swapping over parts is not an option.

Wiring looms differed throughout the vehicle based on trim level, engine trim level and then optional extras, as well as build date.

Thanks Marc
So basically, the more similar the donor car to the new car the more doable these things might be.
In that case I’d also guess that the more years between them the less common they may be.
Seven different wing mirrors you say…… that makes sense. I had to swap one last year as one of my motors went capput, couldn’t find any auto tints at all, had to strip one down to the carcass and motor and swap my harness into it to keep my auto dim, very time consuming.

Yes, and the electrochrome mirrors are linked to to the interior rear view mirror with the same feature - so without that as an example, the associated wiring and programming the mirrors wouldn't tint. You get the drift. There were changes made too after the facelift, so that needs factoring in.

Thanks again Marc
Guess it was a bit unrealistic of me to expect this sort of thing might be easy 😂
