Hello all i am new to this site & very helpful it seems too, i have got a whirring noise coming from the front n/s wheel (i think) only audible from about 30mph, i thought it was brakes binding because when having a look at brakes both front discs had hairline cracks so i decided to replace full set front & rear, and noise is still there! if it is wheel bearings what sort of job is it? any specialist tools ie lump hammer etc. i am a fairly good enough DIYer & would appreciate any advice given.
Just had to replace that dreaded clutch clip (with advice from here) & managed it in 2 hours, more plasters please.

John,
I had a wheel bearing go on my Xantia - noise only above 30mph, and much less on LH bends. Ah, thought I, must be LH wheel bearing then (normal failure symptoms). But no, this is a Xantia, so it was the RH bearing (It sounded like it was coming from the near side too!). Anyway, I got it replaced for £80 at a local garage - if you DIY first you need to get the hub off the car (35mm hub nut socket and BIG breaker bar required), then you need to press out the old bearing, and the new in - it's not worth struggling trying to do it with makeshift means! Half way house is to strip the hub off yourself, and then get your local garage to do the necessary with the bearing in their press.

Hi, the reason for doing both wheels on the same axle for brake repairs is to ensure equal braking performance across the axle. Wheel bearings not so really. However if one has started to fail then good practice in commercial setups is to do both while the vehicle is the works. If you can mange it then why not. The bearing cost is not great and the fitting is going to be free or at best a couple of beers perhaps!
Good luck, Robin
