C5 2008 various problems!

Unread post by petejim23 »

Hi folks

Picked up a C5 2.2HDi estate just over a year ago with a number of the stock issues and while generally delighted with the car, some of the problems are trying my patience!

Most pressing was the steering rack which I already knew from a friend was a recurrent mk3 C5 issue, this was rectified by a local steering specialist who have become familiar with C5s!

The other nagging issue is the suspension - the pump is running on and off constantly and the rear of the car raises and lowers repeatedly when parked until the car goes to sleep. I’ve read a number of posts about the suspension but none seem to tally quite with this symptom - is it as simple as a faulty sensor or incorrectly set where it attaches to the roll bar? The only other bizarre occurrence with the suspension has been a couple of times about 6 months ago where the offside front strut decided to vent a fair quantity of fluid - but has then apparently “behaved” ever since! #-o

More recently I received a warning that the DPF additive fluid low level had been reached. I bought a filling kit and added a couple of litres to the wee tank, but I presume from reading others’ posts that it requires a Citroen-specific software intervention to remove the warning and reset the fluid level. I have access to Delphi car and light commercial diagnostic software but this did not seem to be able to access deep enough as merely clearing the fault doesn’t reset the level counter and the warning just comes back.

Finally, the crowning turd in the water pipe (so far, anyway!) is a wiper anomaly. The offside one functions fairly normally, albeit only on a fairly quick intermittent frequency regardless of stalk position. The nearside motor only moves the arm a few degrees up from the horizontal position, then returns to horizontal (while the offside one is working normally). I have read extensively the experiences of others with C5 X7s and plucked up the courage to investigate, expecting the usual water ingress-related damage. Ok the exterior of both motor housings is noticeably corroded, however upon opening them up, the internals all appeared to be clean and dry, with adequate grease on the moving parts. The units are both dated 6/08 which suggests they may be original, and they have been apart before as someone has previously taken good care to ensure the joins were well sealed back up.

Thanks to anyone who’s taken the time to read this long-winded epistle, and I do hope some of you experienced folks will be able to give me some pointers!

Regarding the wiper motor - someone on here (can't remember where exactly) opened up their motor housing to find a tiny magnet loose on a shaft and that was causing issues for them. A dob of superglue sorted the problem for them.

Interesting. Must have missed that bit! Will investigate. Thanks.

Delphi is an acceptable diagnostic software for standard ECUs and interventions.
Special interventions always require the manufacturer's diagnostic software.
For your C5 X7, this is DIAGBOX 7.57/7.62 - anything else is of limited use.
There are already many articles about the DIAGBOX in this forum.

Of course the warning is going to remain until you reset the additive counter in the engine ECU. This is a requirement and if you don't do this, the engine ECU has no way of knowing that you have topped the fluid up as the tank is not physically measured. Clearing the code is irrelevant until the counter has been reset, as it is telling you it still thinks the fluid needs topping up.

As Wolfgang has said, you need Diagbox or comparative software to do this.

Thanks to those who replied - having found the thread on wiper motors with magnets out of place, this did indeed prove to be the issue, when comparing the photos shown to the position on my faulty motor. Restored magnet to correct position and sure enough normal operation resulted.

As for the rear height sensor anomaly, the diagnostic is showing it cycling between maximum and minimum values. Will get the thing off and see if I can carefully open and clean as per another post on here.

The only fault listed on the suspension system is “Triggering: vehicle speed receipt anomaly. Not characterised” any suggestions what this relates to?

You might want to see if your local scrap yard has a similar C5 and get the height sensors from it as spares. Please make sure that you properly support your car before working on the suspension, as people have been killed when the suspension dropped unexpectedly.

Ignore this, it is a 'ghost' fault that is triggered by the diagnostic interrogation of the Suspension ECU when the vehicle is stationary and therefore not receiving valid speed data from the ESP ECU.

Yeah definitely, thanks. At the moment the rear does not raise to the high position so all the more risky that it could drop without warning. I have access to pits which is handy for this sort of thing as I never really like crawling under a vehicle in a confined space!

Aha, thanks for that, good to know!
