DS5 engine is stopping with main relay errors

Hi guys,

I am new to this forum and to french cars. I own a Citroen DS5 Hybrid4 and lately I encountered an "ugly" issue:
- the car stops(if cruising) or engine stops/stalls when idling with red error showing in the dashboard: "Engine fault" + ABS/ESP + Anti rollback + hand brake errors. It does not run on electric engine either.
I scanned for errors and I got 2 on ECM module + other ECU CAN communication errors on other modules.
The ECM errors:
1: Main relay: poor operation of the relay. The ECU is not being supplied as it should
2: Intersystems CAN. No communication with the Build-in System Interface
Please also see the attached images.

Note: when this issue occurs the ECU is not visible to scanning, so I guess that is not being supplied(as the error already says) - the scans are made when the car is ok.
If I wait 5 - 10 minutes I can start it as if nothing happened.

I removed and cleaned all the fuses on the BSM module, but I cannot get to the relays.
Did you encountered this kind of issue? Where should I focus my attention? Changing the BSM along with the relays?

Well it seems the BSI is not getting supplied, so an issue somewhere and as the Engine Fusebox shown above looks pretty dirty, that's the place I would start. First by checking all the connections and cleaning them up, but if it's a relay, then you'll need to replace the engine fusebox as the internals are not deigned to be replaced.

Thank you for your reply. Indeed it is dirty and even the wires under the bonnet are pretty messed up.
The thing is that is stopping and after a few minutes it starts as it should, with no errors and that is why I'm suspecting more than a broken wire.
So, I should focus my attention on the fuse box/relay BSM module.

It would help if I had the actual fault codes themselves so I can check on the exact explanation - thee code descriptions you have above don't provide anything useful unfortunately. Pope the codes up along with your VIN for me (please post your VIN in full without spaces - it will be automatically masked from public view after submitting your post & will only be visible to staff).

I can post the VIN: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] but regarding the error codes, my scanner only gets them like that(please also see the attached images)

As a side note: do you know if I can fit a BSM-Z03-00 on my model? I have a BSM-AB4-00 and the layout is identical.
I read that are compatible but I would like to be sure.

No, always match the exact part number as they may look the same but the internals and software will be different.

Use the number beginning 96******* under the barcode on the circuit board shown in your bottom photo. That should be the same on the sticker / label on the outside.

Double-check the number, as the second digit is hidden in the photo from my view, but if I'm correct it should be this one: 9677987580.

Yes, I found the same serial number and ordered. I am waiting for the part and hopefully this will fix the issue. I will get back with an update after a while to inform others who may have this issue if this is the fix.

Update: I changed the BSM with an used one with the same serial code and it seems to fix the issue. So, for anyone who has a similar issue and stumbles upon this thread, maybe will find a solution here.
As a side note, this kind of design with the BSM for this models is horrible. If, for example, the low beam relay is not working, you need to change the whole part, which is not practical for many reasons: waste, costs, etc.

Update to update:
1. After a huge pothole which shook the car to almost breaking point, same error with engine fault and car stopped in the middle of the road. After ignition off and on, it worked well, but same "main relay not being supplied" error shows after scanning. Can you please provide me an electrical diagram to/from the engine ECU?

2. After changing the BSM module with the one with the same serial code, my low beam lights are shutting off.
After a couple of seconds after ignition on/engine started the low beams are flickering and are shut down one by one. Sometimes are working for some minutes(but with flickering).
As far as I know the BSM came from a Peugeot 508, but it has the same code. I suspect that the donor car had standard bulbs and my car has xenon lights. Could this be a reason for this behaviour? If so, could a coding/adaption in the right ECU could fix this? Or could a BSI reset do the trick? since I disconnected and reconnected the battery without reseting the BSI

I just realised this is a DS5 and these have the AEE2010 electronic architecture, so like the later C4, and a few other vehicles, require configuring if replaced with the correct options. So yes, it is likely that the 508 which it came from has specific settings, so this will need looking at. Whether your version of Diagbox will allow you to do it though is another matter, as these are usually configured in internet connected mode.

Hi Marc, thank you for your reply! I ordered a Diagbox v7.83 interface which I should receive in the next days. Regarding electrical diagram for ECU connection, can you help me? I tend to believe that there is a broken wire/loose earth connection.
