[C5 X7] 3D printed boot-cubby elastic mounts

Unread post by the-termin8r »

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

I got fed up of things falling out of the cubbies in the boot where the battery and CD changer would sit on higher-spec models. So, I designed some basic mounts to be 3D printed that attach an elastic band to the cubbies. The working principle is quite simple, it just clamps an elastic band on either side of the cubby and it allows for custom tension. Installation is a bit of a faff, but it works as intended for me. Figured I'd share the designs here. The folder includes the STL files and a parts list with (UK) links and a basic installation diagram.

Just a few notes:
  • This requires a little bit of drilling of the cubby, nothing complicated or too damaging. I've provided a stencil in the designs. The stencil has a cutout in it, the length of the cutout is 40mm which is also the width of the elastic. This should help you with positioning.
  • For the clamp piece I've included a version that works without heatserts, because I know not everyone owns a soldering iron.
  • If you use the version with heatserts, you shouldn't need the locknuts to keep it together, but it's a good idea to install them to make sure the vibrations of the car don't undo the screws over time.
  • The locknuts are mandatory if you go for the version without heatserts.
  • I printed mine in PLA, time will tell how they deal with summer heat.

It's is interesting that nothing is provided to make these into a useable storage cubby on the X7 saloon - as there's a similar concept mesh basket provided in these positions on the X7 Tourer (estate) - will try to remember to take a picture in the daylight.

Nice resourceful idea, thanks for sharing!

Yeah, I'm familiar with the estate ones, I was also wondering why the saloon doesn't have a mesh. I actually tried to source the flush covers for the battery and CD changer, but either didn't search the correct terms or there just aren't any around for sale.

Note: this is pocket+ mesh , the mesh isn't listed separately on here at least

The mesh is crap in the estate. No point having there so why lumber the saloon with the same?

Crap: yes,
Better than nothing: personally, think also yes,
Solution (or basis for potential improved solution) for those without access to a 3D printer: yes?

Good idea and thank you for sharing the files for the members.

I used these storage areas in my X7 and unfortunately the standard mesh straps came off on one of the cubby holders from holding various things. Not least was a 5 litre container of screenwash that ended up leaking out into the boot and all over my parking assistance ECU which took me weeks to clean up and dry out.

I think I made a repair to mine by removing it and re-attaching it, but your design would provide additional tension and prevent this from happening, especially if going at unsafe velocities!

I'll copy your post to the ' How To' section.
Please note, I'm no longer active on the Forum, so won't respond to messages.

@the-termin8r - Nice work!!! Great to see such initiative from an owner, and real respect for sharing the guide and STL files :-D

Just want to quickly re-add the files as they seem to have been lost when my account was accidentally deleted. I can't seem to edit the OP, so hopefully anyone looking for them will scroll this far down.

Re-adding the files since zips are no longer allowed. I've put them on my Google drive instead.
