C5 Mk1 vs Mk2 (Restyling) Xenon headlights. Same Connection?

Unread post by yoseff »

As the title says , i'm trying to find if Mk1 Xenon lights and the next restyling have the same connection on headlights?
Thinking about the possibility of changing the front for the restyling one , and (if possible) get the directional xenon lights, in the future.
Anyone around here has that experience?

I doubt it as the Mk1 has separate bulbs for main and dip beam whereas I understand the Mk2 has a single bulb and a steerable beam system. Also, on my Mk1 only dip beam was high intensity, main beam was ordinary halogen (H1 IIRC).
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

The MK2 Has two bulbs, one is the xenon directional bulb for dipped beam and main beam, and a second standard Halogen bulb much the same as any other car. These work together for main beam function. The lights are not compatible as for a start the MKIi is a different shape and the lamps are therefore not interchangeable.

I know that the shape of the lights is different. My idea would be to change the side fenders , front bumper , hood and headlights. My doubt is more in the connection of the headlights , if it would be the same or if it would need some new wiring. (Or other thing that i may be forgetting too)
Got this information on the web, but nothing about the electrical connections. (I think this is more about the front bumper, but the idea would be to change the whole front for the newer "MKIi")

I think i forgot to mention that mine is already with original Xenon (+ a H1 high beam), as it is the 2.2 hdi Exclusive

The system has different wiring and different requirements as the directional lighting is not available as you know on the MK I. So apart from the wiring and the headlamps, there is the matter of the CAN BUS system. You may find that the BSI / software will not support them which would be a total waste of time.

I can't help you further on this as I don't know anyone who has even attempted this.

Yup, probably it would be harder than i expected... I saw one video of a car (When i find it can put it here) that had the MK2 front and Mk1 rear , but i have no idea what involved the change and what was working / not working.
Seems a bit risky to invest the value in the parts and then things not work out well. :(

Probably the directional lights would not work, but i could live with that.

Thanks a lot for the help

I'm sorry for sort of hijacking the thread.
Can you please explain this main beam working together thing?
I noticed that only halogen bulbs light up when I am flashing, but when I turn on the main beam, I get additional brightness from somewhere.
Is that coming from xenon bulbs because there are no other bulbs in there that could do that? 8-[

@Dulenator: You have a MK II with Xenon Directional lighting.

When the headlamps are on at night, the directional Xenon provides the light in dipped mode. A shutter partially covers the xenon in dipped lamp mode to reduce the light output and throw.

When you flash the headlamps (mainbeam), the shutter raises up electronically from the xenon light and allows full brightness from the xenon lamp. However, in addition, in main beam mode the halogen lamp activates too to provide additional lighting.

Well, that explains the double light. I thought that my eyes were deceiving me. :knackered:
Thanks for the clarification!
