Over zealous mot tester.

Unread post by daviemck2006 »

My skoda yeti went in for an mot yesterday, not to my usual tester as he is unavailable for a few weeks. It failed on a broken front spring, which is ok. The spring is now replaced. What has pissed me off though, is the advisories that are noted, which makes it look like my 9 year old car, which is low mileage and immaculate look like an uncared for rust bucket! I will not be using that mot station again.

Sounds to me he, or someone close, is after some work. Trouble is those comments are on the record and can be viewed online by anyone including the next possible owner. The tester has done you no favours at all.

This is why I use an MoT test station that has no connections to any garages, and that is used by some dealerships in the area. They are fair (but also specifically flexible). If (for example) you have a failed headlight bulb they will point it out to you, and ask if you have a spare available in the car. If you have, they will let you fit it, and then carry on with the test. If you have to take the vehicle away with a failure fault then they will fail the vehicle, but if you can resolve the fault at the centre they will pause the test (provided they have the space and time). Some time back a friend and I took his Berlingo for its' test (after we had done some work on the suspension). We thought we had got it all sorted out, but the tester pointed out a clamp that was not tight enough. We had the tools, they gave us the time, we sorted out the clamp (properly, this time!), and she passed the MoT test.

They have quoted well over £200 for discs and pads, I can put up with those advisories as the discs go orange 5 minutes after parking it, but will not pay that for discs and pads. Over £300 for brake flexi hoses, and £700 for a prop shaft carrier. They can get stuffed. And doesn't every 9 year old car have surface rust on its rear axles and suspension arms? And while I'm at the moaning stage the courtesy car they gave me, a 17 plate 46000 mile seat ibiza had the handbrake stuck on when I went into it today, having sat since Wednesday evening in my drive.

This over reporting is a national trend and is driven by VOSA notices to testers. Yes, some will be a bit more enthusiastic than others but this is being driven by VOSA inspections and notices and is not isolated to one harsh Tester.

Think about it, if (when) MOTs are biennial this "harsher" assessment makes more sense from a VOSA perspective.

My normal tester is like that. He may or may not have recorded the discs being rusty, they look ok to me through the wheels, if there is a carrier offering to seize up he would have tried freeing it off during the test, and he wouldnt mention axles or suspension parts with surface corrosion. He adjusts things and fixes minor faults during the test, doesn't give stupid advisories. I wish I'd waited until he was back to work.

I've commented on this somewhere on the MOT change consultation on the other thread as I see far too many of the cowboys here touting for business.

Send him advisory on his spelling 'partily siezed'. Over here test centres are completely independent from garages, this doesn't stop over zealous muppets, or rather one in particular, failing cars for nothing. I've swapped my test station due to a muppet who has some pristine cars (205 gti and the like) cars. He really doesn't like rust. Failed a chaps car because some paint was lifting from the ant-roll bar, I questioned it, he said 'wire brush it back, if it's not corroded re-paint it and I'll pass it'?????????

It is though typical of a seaside car, I stopped buying cars from Swansea for that very reason.
The tester is just covering his ass in case you sell it on and the buyer goes to VOSA to complain.

Being a dry day here I went and had a look under the back of the yeti. It's made me more annoyed at the advisories. I've seen discs many times worse than mine passing and have absolutely no intention of changing them. The anti roll bar and rear suspension arms are discoloured, but no worse than any other car I have owned. Cant get far enough under to see the axle. The fuel tank strap that I see, again discoloured not rusty. I cant really see the brake hoses. I think when my normal mot man returns to work I shall ask his opinion on it. I just feel if I was advertising this car for sale now it would be near impossible to sell as folk looking up the advisories would think it's a bucket of rust and on its last legs, which it's not.
