Random smokey 205 engine??

Post by gjb02 »

Just aquired a 205 1.1GL 1988. It has been sat for over a year and a half on my mates drive. Despite a flat battery, and the worlds population of spiders, no real problems. I slaved in a battery and brrrmmm put putt brmmmmm...she fired up.
No smoke, even the brakes weren't seized. I drove it down the drive and up and down the lane next to his house...then it started billowing smoke! Then the smoke stopped, its been run a couple of times since and no smoke. Yet earlier the engine had been running a while, the fan cut in and then it started to smoke (definate oil smoke) I turned it off left it a while and it started, no smoke??? What gives? Any ideas?

This sounds like you have a sludged up emissions vent system and the seperator valve is clogged up. Remove the vent pipe from the Cam cover and the associated diagram valve and remove and clean all the pipes with white spirit. Remove the vacuum pipe and make sure it is clean. You will nedd to shake the valve a lot to get all the sludge out. Reassemble and that should fix it. Regards Peter

Thanks for that Peter, I'll give that a go.
Any ideas how best to get these sheared off bleed nipples out of the calipers[V]?

There of course a hole down the middle and a screw extrator could be used. However these nipple get well corroded in and would suggest you remove the caliper and drill the nipple out until you get upto 0.2mm under the core size so as not to damage the treads in the caliper. Do not drill down to far or you will damage the tapered seat. You can usually pick the thread out now like a coil. Good luck. Regards Peter

I had same problem on a Escort.Had sat 4 a few years(92 k)on drive home started smoking,stalling KNOCKING!! from big ends.Then alright.Then not.Gave it a damned good service,plugs oil filters,fresh fuel,clean breather hoses.Seemed to do the trick,still running fine now 2yrs later.
Keep us informed.
