Which torque setting to follow?

Unread post by sanlo »

Hey there.

I have an old Xsara 1.6 16v 2001 (TU5JP4), I'm doing my first head gasket replacement.
I bought new a gasket (Elring 384.420) and head bolts (Elring 431.440). The bolts seems to be a new revision without washers.

The info i got from the internet was to tighten the head bolts to 20 NM and angular tight to 260°. The new head-gasket came with instructions to angular tight it to 130° instead.
Which specs should I follow to install the head?

Thank you.

The info I have says different, but agrees with your findings - the picture below is the same as yours, you just need to rotate it, but it shows you the flywheel end for clarification.

Tighten the bearing carrier screws in the order indicated.

Tightening torque:
Pre-tighten to 2 daNm
Angular tightening to 260°

So the info you found corresponds with the above for tightening.

Elring instructions also state to tighten to 20 Nm + 260° angular, just in two steps (2x 130°).

I guess that would make sense, but it wasn't clear from my untrained eye.
