Yuasa Batteries. Green indicator.

Unread post by seanrx »

Am sure a lot of C5 owners have a Yuasa battery fitted.

So, whilst driving, my alternator failed mid journey.

I continued until battery was flat (no choice) and many fault sensors flashing as expected. Just limped home.

Battery is charged and I've load tested it at just over 600 CCA.
Great! But it's green indicator is now not showing.

Just a one off or another battery problem to be expected?

The alternator itself, am replacing at weekend.

I once bought a battery from online seller Tayna (they're a very large seller) and I noted its battery charge indicator wasn't green even though it was charged so I emailed them to ask about it. They said not to worry too much as long as the battery was showing a fully charged voltage. IIRC, the indicator only measures one cell and should be taken as a guide and not an absolute. I think one thing that can cause it not to show green is it being marginally low on electrolyte.

From Tayna? I did too.

The battery is only 15 months old, thankfully I haven't ruined it. And good to know it's a guide only, not exact.

Perhaps that's why Varta (and so Bosch) don't use them.

With a new alternator, will see if the green will return.

Take the battery 'indicator' with a pinch of salt, just a gimmick & not the slightest bit accurate to indicate the condition of the battery.

Fully agreed... Conversely I've had batteries that have never shown green but have been fine.

I've bought several batteries from Tayna and also 'tested' their customer service... I bought a new Yuasa battery for daughter's Pixo not realising at the time the root cause of the problem was a duff alternator that randomly severely overcharged the battery. It killed the battery in short time but the indicator on the battery remained green.

Tayna swapped it without question or quibble and very rapidly. No problems since swapping the alternator...
