lidl oil pump

Unread post by boristhespie »

I note Lidl has oil change pumps on sale today. Can anyone confirm that removing oil of my C5 hdr using one of these is fine. Some say yay and others say nay. I assume this is stuck down the oil dipstick and you replace the same amount you remove? Are there any problems with this method. It would save me having to pay the best part of £200 to the garage.

Changing oil by suction: yes you are correct, thin flexible pipe passed down the dipstick tube and oil sucked out that way.

I've read that certain engines are "prepared for oil change by suction" and principally this is the dipstick tube having nice flared ends and so is unlikely to snag a pipe passing in and out.

Sorry I don't know the specifics if your engine is suitably "prepared"

There used to be a concern that suction oil changes were less complete than conventional gravity draining, but in reality where some engines have recessed sump plugs the opposite can be true!

I've the sump off the bottom of a (petrol EW10A) engine and the dipstick tube comes right down close to the inside of the sump, I'd be confident there's no significant difference in an oil change done by either technique with that particular engine.

Am well out the loop for garage prices (tyres and MOT are usually only time I'm there so long as can help it!) But £200 for an oil change alone seems very steep indeed.

I have a Lidl transfer pump (12volt driven) I think it's suitable for suction oil changes, I've used it for transferring diesel and worked well for that. I think if I pump used engine oil through it then it wouldn't be fit for fuel transfer after that so am "keeping it clean" for the moment.

Citroen are OK with suction draining.
There are some manufacturers engines that dont even have a sump plug now like some variants of the smart car, suction draining only.

Wonder if the Lidl pump is ok with 80°C??? Will need to have a read of the instructions I think.

I have one the 'Ultimate Speed' 12V oil pumps (Lidl ? Aldi ?) and they're only rated for 60°C, but I only use it to transfer clean oil so that's somewhat immaterial. For oil changes I use a hand pumped vacuum pump and never run into any problems with operating temperatures.

I've used exactly one of those in my 2.2 hdi to remove almost 6 liters (!) of oil in total from it's engine...
Well , it was in reality Oil with diesel (Because the ****** DPF) :grr:
I was about to remove oil from below, but the screw seems to be hit by a rock or something, and by the time had no spare one, so decided to use the Lidl pump.
It worked out well, but in my case, even if it seemed to be touching the bottom , i had to "jiggle" the tube a bit more, and finally i was able to go further and remove almost all of the oil.
That will be a temporary oil, so i didnt care much to think if all of it was out , but i suspect that if some was left there , was not that much.
Also used it to remove the diesel from the filter housing when changing fuel filter (Both in 2.0 and 2.2 hdi)
So , yes, in my case it worked well.
I "Clean the pump" by running some new oil by it.

It's painful to "waste" some good , clean oil to clean it , but it's the price to pay in order to keep it fit :D
