Unread post by ohspecial1 »

Hi folks

Nemo had LED LIGHTS SIDE AND MAINS loved the colour and brightness

Was told by mot garage that the beam was all over the place

So they replaced all 4 bulbs plus mot at £113

but i now have normal side bulbs and halogen main and was told would be brightner but they seem dimm to me

Have enclosed image of the lights

The issue with aftermarket LED lamps is that most of them aren't built to emit the light to the required specification. If you take a normal halogen H7 (or H4, or H1 etc) lamp then the filaments will all be in exactly the same place - an Osram lamp will be the same as a Philips lamp will be the same as a Neolux lamp will be the same as a Halfords lamp, etc - all the filaments will be in exactly the same place so the beam pattern created by the headlamp reflector and lens will be the same. An awful lot of LED lamps just have LED emitters shoved approximately somewhere on the lamp fitting, so the beam the headlamp creates will be random, and that's where the MOT failure comes into it as the beam pattern is meant to be relatively precise. The are a very few LED headlamp bulbs that do meet specifications, but whether it's worth trying to source them is up to you.
Philips, Osram and others do make good (relatively) high intensity 'standard' lamps - look for the Osram Nightbreaker series or Philips Vison series. The downside is that they have a shorter life.

There aren't any LED replacement for Halogens that are 'e' type approved that I'm aware of (so therefore not road legal) apart from a very few OSRAM LEDs that have had individual approval for very few vehicles in very few countries. I can't see the legislation changing at this late stage as far as I can see as most new cars have proper LED headlamps fitted. Also, be thankful your MOT station picked this up, as if you had blinded an oncoming driver and had a crash, your insurance might have something to say about it has you have fitted non-type approved lamps....

As Bobins says, you are best sticking with legal Halogen upgrades which is what I have. The trade off is that the legal brighter, whiter crisper halogen bulb upgrades don't last as long as a standard 'yellowish' lamp. Most of the upgrades now show the expected life in hours on the bulb packets. A small price to pay though for better vision I would suggest.
