Stiff and squeeky gear change (intermittent)

Hi, hope I can get some answers here.
My gear selector on my 2014 C4 picasso hdi vtr+ gear shift has become intermittently stiff and squeeky when mostly going into 3rd.
I removed the center box/storage and for 3 weeks it's been normal until today when it returned!

Is this something someone else has dealt with?
I understand that to replace this it has to come out from under the car.
