C2 VTR Ongoing Cruise Control Issue

Unread post by larkspeed »

I just can't seem to figure this one out.

My cruise control will randomly not initialize.

Because it is an intermittent fault it's making it very difficult to figure out.

I slide the switch to the on position on the steering wheel and nothing happens, I don't get the bong sound that indicates it's ready and pushing the buttons on the wheel has no effect.

I put in a brand new switch on the brake pedal as I read that can cause it and I also replaced the steering wheel controls and neither thing fixed it.

There are no error codes stored and when I plugged in a lexia it registered when each of the buttons was pressed and when the on switch was moved.

It is the only thing in the car that doesn't work properly.

And the seemingly random occasions that it does initialize it works perfectly, as soon as it's either switch off or the car is parked it's a crap shoot if it will turn back on when I want it.

I'm honestly at a loss here, the cruise was one of the reasons I bought this car and it worked on the test drive.

Normally the reason Cruise Control does not work is because something else (more important) has 'failed', and (for safety reasons) some driver assists are taken offline. I am not saying that this is the case with YOUR vehicle, but it may be worth checking for other faults. I would take the Lexia with you when you go for a drive, and when the problem occurs see if the Lexia can let you know what is in an error state.

But that's why it's confusing because there are no other faults and everything else works fine.

I have no real solution. I have installed cc in my 1.6 sensodrive Pluriel. Same setup with the controls on the steering wheel. It did not work after enabling the required stuff via Lexia. All buttons worked and pressing them could be seen in Lexia. But it did not work. It felt like it wanted to work for an instant when activating. In the end it turned out that there was something wrong. In Lexia it was set for bsi not to be enabled or present or something. After changing that it worked. But it is still misbehaving at occasions. Buttons do something else them they should. This is to do with the not so great quality of the stuff and the design of the solution.

As yours works sometimes I don’t think it is the solution. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

Any fault picked up by the engine ECU or speed sensors are enough to disable speed control systems like the limiter and cruise for safety reasons. Because it is random, it could indicate an intermittent fault and that may be why you aren't picking up a permanent fault.

Check in the stored fault logs in Lexia, which should store a list of recurring faults, so that if there is a temporary fault it should be shown (possibly multiple times) and that may give you a clue, or post the fault code up here.

I'd tend to agree with you

I am not sure what the steering wheel and controls look like on the C2 2004 but i am guessing they are similar to the C4 2005.
I have experienced an issue like this on my lads 2005 C4 which i subsequently owned and used. It would do exactly as you describe. Both Cruise and Limiter would work and yet not and then work again all on the same journey without stopping the engine. It never showed a fault on lexia but if it is the same steering wheel layout as the C4 2005 then dust and heat over the years seems to have some effect. I found that pressing down on the area around the switch on the steering wheel seemed to make it work 99% of the time, once it engaged the +/- buttons worked well.

Have you owned the car since new? Did this event suddenly happen? Has it always done this since you owned it?

I assume that the car was used when you bought it and it has always done this? If that's the case I would get Citroen to update all the cars ECU's. There were a number of software "bugs" in LEXIA and ECU updates around 2004-2005. SOP is to update the ECU's during the warranty period if the car came in for servicing. A bug may have been introduced or missed. Does your sensodrive drop out of "auto" when you actuate either of the "paddles" (to override the gearbox)? Or does it stay in auto? If it drops out of auto then that's the "old" sensodrive software.

If this has just happened and it was fine before, then I would assume that "something" has "broken".
Is the car's configuration in LEXIA correct E.G. no clutch switch?

The on/off switch is a slider, which seems to be a weak point

Thanks Ross, totally different from the C4 2005 but it was the on/off switch that was causing my problems.
Put into context a 18 year old car with only a cruise control switch is not bad really.
Looks like the switch is replaceable so worth a punt if someone can get the right part number and diagrams.

sorry to everyone who replied to this thread for some reason I never got any notifications of replies.

I ended up replacing the buttons and the issue remained, there were no lexia fault codes so I never did figure it out.

Honestly I just learned to live with it.
