Turntables / record players - WTD

Unread post by Michel »

Hi All,

Young Michel, who's turning 13 on Friday, has discovered an interest in vinyl records. I'm looking for a *reasonable* quality turntable to plug into my reasonable sounding Technics unit for him to use until he either gets really into it and buys a good one when he's older, or gets bored and decides he doesn't like vinyl after all.

I know plenty of you on here are into such things, and wonder if you can offer guidance, or maybe you even have such a thing for sale at a reasonable price?

thanks for any input or advice (other than "vinyl is a pain in the arse, not worth the hassle"- I know that)

Hi Michel
I think I have a Garrard SP25 Mk3 turntable tucked away in the loft. If I am right (I did sell some of my hifi so not sure) I can take a look up there if you are interested, I would suggest £40 would secure it if I find it is all ok! Let me know if you might be interested because I won't bother going up there if not1 :-D
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Sold mine just recently clearing some space, I've seen a few in the charity shops.

That would be absolutely perfect Mick! Yes, I'm definitely interested and can collect if you can find it - I presume I can still get stylus etc for the older units?

thanks ever so much!

If you can't get a stylus you can replace the cartridge.
I have a 70's Sonab 75 S* and had to replace the belt and the cartridge, neither were expensive.

Mick's offer is a good one. I bought a simple manual deck for my youngest daughter, a Rega Planar II, about £400. May be a bit pricey but was to fit in with her existing amp and speakers.

* actually made for Sonab by Yamahahaha.

Your enquiry prompted me to venture into the loft to find my old Dual CS505-3 - my first entry level half decent gramophone player from back in the day. Turns out the chassis is now warped, the drive belt needs replacing, and the motor is reluctant to run. That'll be going for recycling then :(

Whilst I'm at it, if anyone is interested in an Arcam irDACII, Cambridge Audio DACMagic 100, or an Arcam A19 amp, then PM me :-D

Well that turned out to be a bit of a mission! :-D I almost gave up when I remembered I had put a couple of boxes round the back of the old tank for safety and sure enough that was where I found these. Unfortunately I missled you with the Garrard SP25, I forgot that I upgraded that when I bought my new amp so the one I have is a Dual CS 5000 which I am sure Steve can confirm is a much better deck. I have plugged it in and it runs silently on all three speeds taking the appropriate time to get up to speed and extinguish the associated monitor light. There is a brand new 78 stylus with it but I doubt that will be needed! :-D So in view of the upgrade I have to ask for £50 for it which I believe is still a very good price and, if your lad's phase dies, will be easily recoverable through ebay, even with a little profit!!

However there is one condition which is that it comes with a free gift of 54 albums which I had to shift to get to the deck and it seems sensible not to store them any longer!! So the deal is £50 for the deck, the albums and you collecting from Hertford. There could be a collection issue because I am off to Spain for a week on Wednesday and tied up tomorrow so it needs to be today , Tuesday or after I get back!! :-D

I have never owned a Dual deck but we had some at work that were indeed most satisfactory.

I couldn't resist the temptation to hook it up to my amp as I had the records there. Currently playing Louis Armstrong with all the old analgue charm we grew to love!! It works a treat!! Looks like the footy will be pics only this afternoon!! :-D

I have a Dual CS505 here... In fact I have one and three quarters as I bought one very cheaply for spares... It works but is lidless...

I treasure my vinyl and have recorded most of it onto MiniDisc to avoid unnecessary wear on it...

So you've reduced me to this for this afternoon's game but at least you can see/hear it working although my camera work is grim and the mic pickup not great, you get the idea :-D

Since FIFA vetoed the first attempt here's the demo without the footy!!
