ABS Fault - Xsara Picasso

Unread post by jscadden »

Intermittent ABS fault warning.

Comes on and goes off at any time.

The vehicle just passed it's MOT with only a gaiter needing to be replaced and braking seems OK otherwise.

Regards
John

Did this intermittent ABS issue begin after the gaiter was replaced? I'm presuming here it was a CV boot gaiter...

First noticed it a while ago. I'd borrowed it from the previous owner and I had a puncture whilst out. As far as I'm aware, it started then.

It may be down to damage to an ABS reluctor ring (the toothed cog-like device) on the outer CV joint body...

It can also be down to dirt trapped in the teeth of the ring or dirt and/or stray iron filings on the face of the ABS sensor itself...

Sometimes the reluctor ring can crack due to corrosion underneath it allowing it to move and spin of its own accord leading to the ABS system recording incorrect speeds for the wheel in question and thus bringing up the warning...

One upon a time new rings could be purchased to replace damaged ones... They needed to be heated in an oven to fit them as they are a shrink fit on the CV joint body... Not sure if they remain available...

Reluctor rings for the Xsara Picasso are available, but you need to get the right ones. This is an example;
