We have a 308 diesel (VIN VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]) that is overdue some love and attention.
When we bought the car, second-hand, the Peugeot dealer said it had a timing chain that should be replaced at 150K miles. The independent garage that we use for work I can't do and for MOTs keeps telling me it is a timing belt.
Which is it? How big a job is the replacement of it? Do we need to incur the cost of the garage doing it or is it something that could be done on the drive by a relatively competent person?

It's a belt (well technically it has both, but the chain only drives the exhaust cam)
It's not that hard to change as timing belts go, Timing pin kit is relatively cheap, there are plenty of videos on Youtube of doing the belt on this engine. At 2010 it will be a 16V version - if it has a stretch aux belt DO NOT turn the engine backwards getting the belt on, this can unseat the cam chain for the exhaust cam, which is not good!!
