If you ever needed convincing cleaning out the sump was a good idea (307 EW10A 2.0 petrol)
I have an engine on a stand, bought cheap on eBay (£80!) Mileage unknown, believe it's an 2006-2007 vintage. Do know it's from a 307 and is an EW10A (or as per data plate is actually an EW10AF)
Ultimately I plan to fit this in my 2000 406 Coupe in place of its current, somewhat tired EW10J4 (169000 miles covered)
Sump off for a clean up of the "new" engine. Here's a few before and after pictures

And after
Far from perfect, but suffice to say I don't feel like I was wasting my time there!

Having seen the state of the sump Matt, are you now considering a full engine overhaul? New shells and rings whilst it's all in bits might be a good plan...
Plus a good old clean-up!

Probably about 18 months ago I found what happens if you carry too much speed down a very bumpy road in the Coupe, so had a cracked sump to replace, The second hand replacement sump, and the cracked one I took off all looked very similar internally, so I think really it's just what 15-20 years of use looks like.
I know so little about this cheap engine, at present my plan is to chuck it in the car and see how it goes, I can then decide if the Coupe's original engine or the "new" one is best candidate for a more involved refurbishment, or put this Coupe out to pasture and buy a V6 or who knows.
The Coupe has no oil cooler (more accurately no coolant-oil heat exchanger) so has less tight control on oil temperature. As such I was quite surprised that the EW10A (which does have the heat exchanger) sump was quite so horrible inside - thought it would be much nicer in there if oil not hot enough to burn on every surface! Obviously I've no service history or mileage record for this engine, so maybe it would have been lovely inside if it had enjoyed a cherished life!
The Coupe was bought cheap with a dying automatic gearbox, is now manual, so it's already on its second life to an extent. Love it to bits, but it's quite tatty in truth.
I'm seeking to add the free flowing alloy inlet manifold (£20 bargain!) plus the 4-1 tubular exhaust manifold of the (206 GTi-280 / C4 VTS = EW10J4S) when I do the engine swap.
Throttle body choice and functionality of inlet cam VVT are both up I the air at present.
(J4S = 70mm throttle by wire, EW10J4= 52mm mechanism Bowden Cable operation)

Great looking car but mostly a 406 in a pretty frock. Fortunately 406 is a great starting point from when Peugeot was doing great things.Huskyxantia wrote: 24 Oct 2022, 16:27 Ohhh i keep seeing these cars and are liking the look of them lots, what they feel like ?
Quite a big car, so not quite the "chuckability" of say a 306 but still fun to nip about at speed through the corners.
Suspension fairly soft and the 2 litre runs teeny tiny 15" wheels with huge 60 profile tyres, so ride comfort excellent. Ok hydraulic Citroen would beat it, but would beat anything, wouldn't it!
2 litre has short gearing so 3400rpm at 70mph takes the edge of what is a great cruiser. V6 a bit longer ratios I think.
There is a six speed ML gearbox (ex- 307 HDi, again eBay bargain= £54!) That I may try to fit to the coupe - mates up to the EW10A ok, need to sort clutch choice for that as BE and ML gearboxes seems to have different input shaft spline dimensions.
Lots of people enjoy bitching about the 2.0 being too slow. I can't pretend 137 bhp is an excess of power but it goes well enough I think. Actually, considering the low ratio of 5th gear, it'll just kiss 60mph at the top end of second gear, so that's fairly long which doesn't help it's get up and go feeling.
Seats really comfy, electric adjustable leather in my SE. Leather isn't fabulous quality but is nice enough.
Oh and cracked bumpers pretty much write off the car.
(When you could get on Service Box) I checked the price £764, unpainted for just the front!

A very pretty frock indeed
Truly a gorgeous looking car... They're great in V6 form with their big Brembo front brakes but as you say, a bit squishy in the suspension department...
The shame was that it was originally going to be the Citroen Activa with the full Xantia Activa suspension setup and a 3.0 V6 manual...
That would have made it very chuckable and rather lively!!!
And very desirable...

I'd not heard about it nearly having the double chevrons but Activa suspension would be the icing on the cake!CitroJim wrote: 24 Oct 2022, 18:22 A very pretty frock indeedTruly a gorgeous looking car... Brembos a blessing and a curse I believe, work well but a good example of mixing materials giving issues - corrosion between alloy caliper and stainless slider plates makes them squeal often. Others recon the standard brakes are insufficient, but I must not work them hard enough as seem fine to me (not enough power, so must be too busy "conserving momentum"
It seems a shame to me that the EW10 engine seemed to have such a short lifespan, if it had stuck around a while longer it could have joined the turbocharging revolution then would be a great option to slot into the Coupe (think next step up to the 1.6 turbo Prince engine)
The V6 seems to be a little outdated - perhaps overly harsh term, but 210 bhp from 3.0 litres, not really breaking any records,

Just for future reference, the muck wasn't that firmly stuck to the surface so special tools employed were:
Next job on this is to drill and tap a nice big hole in the sump and add a threaded hose tail: EW10J4S inlet manifold has a strange catch tank arrangement with drain connection straight to the sump - doesn't exist on the EW10A ( or the regular EW10J4)
- wire brush for initial scrub
- old socks as rags, holes in the toes optional

- WD40, just a little to help lift the greasness
