Gearbox faulty, Parking Brake faulty, Anti-Pollution system faults.

Unread post by Matty223 »

Hi,
recently been having a few headachy problems with my Citroen C4 Grand Picasso 09 Auto.
Firstly whilst driving I was getting a ESP ABS faulty/ parking brake faulty , which would result in the Automatic gear changing stopping.
So it would automatically change gears up to 3 but wont not change above that, the paddles didn't work. The only way to go into a higher gear was to change to neutral then to Auto and it would choose the correct gear for the speed I was going. It would change gears down automatically but not up.
I managed to clear this by watching a helpful YouTube video about cleaning the ABS sensors on all the wheels. So I did that and the car for a while worked like a dream.
Two weeks later and now the car sometimes start and sometimes not, getting Gearbox faulty, Parking Brake faulty, Anti-Pollution system faults.
The car would start, then lose power, try again, start and drive with these faults.
On one occasion the wife took the car out but couldn't restart it so called the RAC, his report is at the bottom.
He fixed it with his OBD ( I only have a streetwize one and its pretty much useless) No faults smooth drive she said but after she got home and turn it off the car would not start and its just giving me the same three faults.
Reading over his report it look like its the gearbox control unit but if he was able to reset it with his OBD do you think I could just get a decent one and keep resetting the fault?
If not could anyone point me in the right direction to change it out? would it need reprogramming or is it a straight swap
Thanks for any help
Matt

You really have way too many fault codes here to go into every one - it really needs looking at properly at a decent garage that knows these vehicles or a dealer. The one thing that sticks out is the speed information. Speed information is essential for most of the systems referred to above, and if the speed data is incoherent or missing it will of course impact on things like the automatic gearbox and the ABS / ESP system, electronic handbrake etc.

The fact that you already mentioned an improvement after cleaning the wheel speed sensors may be a clue. I would be checking all wiring plug connections to and from the ABS ESP ECU as this is a key component that impacts on the engine ECU and the BSI. Other faults may be historical and really should of been cleared first, then re-read after a quick drive to see which reappear.

You are correct about your code reader - they can only read the most basic codes and will not be able to read all the ECUs or faults, which require a bespoke (Lexia / Diagbox) or professional level diagnostic reader.

Pop your VIN up (please post your VIN in full without spaces - it will be automatically masked from public view after submitting your post & will only be visible to staff). I'll take a look at the most important ones for you.

Hi Marc thanks for the reply, I've checked all the fuses and most of the electrical wiring in the loom behind the battery, funny because the car would start, on at least the third try now after moving things and resiting plugs it won't start at all, I may of missed something. Will the lexia3 obd work it's seems more in my price range.

Yes a Lexia kit will come with Diagbox. I recommend you stick with that version as Version 9 prevents configuring ECUs in offline mode. V7.58 will be fine as it covers vehicles to 2014.

Although not affiliated, there is a discount available for members from this UK supplier that I and many others have used:

Managed to get someone else to put their reader on the car and have narrowed down some of the faults.
1. 0528 Absence of command of the starter
2. 0015 No communication with the Engine ECU
3. U1108 Absence of communication with the engine Management ECU and Hybrid management ECU(If The Hybrid ECU is present)
4. 098B Front Left Side Light
5. 098B Engine Fuse Box Front Left Side Light Fault

Did you check your battery output. And charging amps / voltage could be a few bogus dtc there dues to voltage being down. Get s drop test done on battery

Hi Goldwing tried re charging the battery was getting ample output but same.
Bit of progress, I swapped out the BSM with a second hand one which has cleared the previous faults but provided me with new ones.
The codes im getting now are
P0500
P0700
P1351
U0121
U0122
The speedometer is showing -- and the mileage has disappeared and the parking brake is not functioning. The car will crank occasionally now if I disconnect the battery and reconnect it, where before it wouldn't even do that.
I guess the codes are pointing to the abs pump module, am I right in saying you cant swap these over without having to reprogramme them?
cheers

I would suggest cleaning your original one thoroughly and replace it.
