307sw fails but lives ???

Unread post by Huskyxantia »

Me again

Driving my 307sw today i noticed both tacho & speedo dropped to 0 the temp and fuel gauges dropped to there rest postions then the ignition lights came on then everything went back to normal , all this and i was still driving, engine running and doing about 40mph no shudders nothing all normal.
My first thought was lose ignition loom ? Starter motor earth lose , alternator connectors lose ?

Any one had this happen ?, I had no mil light , and as of yet no free time to run lexia till the weekend coming.

If everything else carried on as normal (IE driving fine) then is loose connection not more likely to be dashboard / instrument cluster than anything in the engine bay?

Checking the batter terminals would be my first port of call then the main earth on the gearbox, give it a tug as they are known to rot.

There'll be a multi pin connection on the back of the instrument cluster - that's the one I am describing. Also normally 2 or 3 earth connections behind dashboard.

Gearbox (not glovebox!) Earth connection is on top of the gearbox (on BE4 5 speed box, think similar on 6 speed ML box) single M8 (13mm head) hex bolt, adjacent to engine mount. Usually remove air filter housing and follow big thick black sheathed cable from battery direct to gearbox connection.

Sorry the above advice is general, not 307 specific - don't have direct experience of messing with one of those.

You might also add the BSI to the list of possible culprits. It could be a bad soldered joint or dodgy relay.

.................................................
So driving this 307sw for a few months my findings so far
Roomy inside , pretty good ride height, driver seat is ok a bit firm after a long trip. The crankshaft pulley is making that wonderful noise so will need replacing soon , an idler pulley has bearings starting to fail near the ac pump so that will need replacing soon . I do find the car feels heavy ,goes great on motorways. It still looks in date for its age . So far im ok with it.
