1.6 HDI looses fuel prime over night.

Unread post by Adue210 »

Hi,

The wife’s grand c4 Picasso 1.6 e-hdi from 2014, has been a major pain for the last few weeks. It started with a faulty injector 1, this got replaced at the local dealer. Since it has had an intermittent issue where it won’t start after sitting for a few hours, the workshop has used 6 full working days without doing more than burning through 💰

First time it went back to the workshop they replaced the eoyls tank and pump. The morning after the issue was back. For the last few visits they had been “diagnosing“ electrical issues according to the workshop. Last Friday I called it quits and started to diagnose the issue myself.

What I found so far is that it seems like I have a leak somewhere is the fuel system. When the car won’t start in the morning it just needs a few pumps on the primer pump and the car fires up straight away.
When the issue is active the fuel pressure while cranking is below 100 bar. After pumping the primer a few time the car fires and the pressure rises to ~330 bars at idle.

I have been looking for leaks on the injector returns and around the fuel filter (has been replaced) and everything is bone dry.
The filter is full of diesel, but when removing the hoses connected to the top of the filter nothing spills out. Around 30 seconds after shutting the car off the fuel pressure is 0 bar.

Can someone help me get in the right direction to solve this issue?

Your primer bulb has 2 one valves fitted either side of the bulb. If the one nearest to the tank is not sealing correctly it will slowly leak back to the tank.

Just confirmed this problem with my C5.

Unfortunately, it required removal to confirm this.

Hope this helps
