3rd time lucky?
Hi I'm new ,appreciate been welcomed on here, sorry for length of post,,, I'm on my 3rd engine in 3 months, engine 1, xud 1.9td, seized and blown head, engine 2, 1.9 xud n/a, suspect cracked head, engine number 3 dw8 n/a, engine 2 had a bosch pump so I was happy with that but it didn't work
lots of blood sweat and tears later I have a nice sounding dw8 engine which starts great, I have removed crank sensor and pump and injectors, pump has a wire with 4 wires? and the immobiliser (removed), I have fitted the td engine1 pump and injectors( lucas), which I believe to be ok, road test was pretty satisfactory, however my problem is white smoke, lots of it, my next step is attempt to adjust the pump somehow to weaken mixture
, any information is very much appreciated and could help me from going insane,
, Thanks in advance, lee

Re: 3rd time lucky?
Welcome
It's not the mixture, but rather the injection timing, which is critical. This is adjusted by rotating the pump, I can't remember the exact details on the Lucas pump, but you really need a dial test indicator to do it properly. I think the white smoke suggests it's retarded, so you could try advancing the pump a bit to see if gets better - this would be by rotating the pump towards the engine.

Re: 3rd time lucky?
I always used to do it by listening to the sound but had many years of experience. Used to do diesel conversions using the Perkins 4/99 - 4/108 engines and even then I had a couple of crankshafts break because the timing was over advanced - only slightly but they only had a three bearing crankshaft. Did my first one in 1959.
The XUD engine is notoriously difficult to bleed, I bought a BX estate from a mechanic, he hadn't bled it properly and the head cracked, got it cheap though so didn't mind. The 2.1 XUD11 used in the XM and others had a completely revised cooling system with the thermostat in the return pipe, brilliant arrangement, almost impossible to have air in it, in fact it was a brilliant engine all round.

Lucas and Bosch pumps mount differently (using different back plates) I believe.

Notice the BX is still top the list but sadly gone

Re: 3rd time lucky?
They also need their own pipes, the injection order from the pump is different.
