2.0 HDI weird vibration at 2000 rpm

Unread post by icu12345 »

My Peugeot 308 2.0 HDI has a mysterious vibration noise which has got me puzzled.

The noise comes at precisely 1950 rpm and sounds as if some resonant frequency is met at exactly this rpm (see/hear video: The noise is only dependent on the rpm, so it doesn't matter if the car is in motion or just standing in neutral. It gets significantly louder when the outside temperature is cold. The colder the weather, the louder the noise and vice-versa. If the car has been in direct sunlight on a hot summer day the noise almost disappears.

Has anyone encountered something like this before? I can almost hear it coming from the interior, but this could also be an illusion. Maybe bad engine mounts? I don't hear anything when I am standing in front of the car with the hood opened and someone else I revving the engine. Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you :)

Do you use the air con a lot ? If so check the damper pulleys they wear faster as the ac compressor works the pulleys hard the then worn pulleys can make some weird sounds, also get the lower crankshaft pulley checked out they wear and vibrate too

Well I haven't used the AC in a while because it was leaking. After replacing the AC compressor I started using the ac almost daily but this didn't change the vibration. It also doesn't matter if the ac clutch is engaged or not.

I replaced the belts and all serviceable pulleys one year ago and this didn't change anything as well.

If it is a pulley issue then I guess I would be hearing it in the engine compartment as well? The noise however is only to be heard from the inside of the car.

Just had another listen to the sound , its like its comming from behind the instrument cluster, defiantly not a pulley , maybe see if there's any youtube videos of how to remove the cluster ?
