Adblue warning not going out./ Car now immobilised

Unread post by Rojomateus »

Filled my Adblue a few times without problems. The last time I did so the warning light on the dash did not go out and it continued to count down. Also got engine fault warning at one point. Service message also came up - but it was due and a service is booked. Given some poor advice that as I'd replaced the Adblue that the sensor was just playing up and to ignore it and raise at my service. Count down continued and obviously passed zero on my last trip home. So tonight when I went to do a journey the car will not start.

After much hunting online I have contacted someone who has a computer system who is coming in the morning to clear the system and I believe this will get my mobile again as it will reset the adblue counter to 1500 - if it comes on again?? - Not sure if he will also be able to give me error codes but if he does I will record them.

Posting this just before midnight as wondering if the clear will work? Some reading has also shown me it may be something called the Nox sensor which might be faulty and/or an Adblue tank problem?? All sounds expensive?

If the computer clears the warning/resets it can I wait till my service to get the car looked at (its on 15th Sept) or will I be causing damage in meantime ie I do not know if the sensor purely acts as a reminder to add Adblue or if it serves another function. This service is paid for as the final in a series of them when I bought the car - but I presume any fix they offer will be expensive and likely cheaper elsewhere??

Any advice in general or specifically - this seems (now) from my reading/google to be a known issue with these cars?

Thanks for reading! :(

Welcome. Sorry to hear you have joined the broken Ad Blue club! Although I have not done it, I do understand you can re-set the counter and allow a further period of driving before starting is blocked again. Did the low level warning come on unexpectedly early? Sadly, it's likely that it needs a new tank - which are very expensive, and availability may be an issue at the moment. You won't cause any damage to the car driving it with the system in op - it is exhaust treatment to reduce NOx.

Do you know what tool is being used? If its diagbox you may be able to reset it by carrying out the initialisation of the DeNox system procedure. i would only do this for getting to a garage though, don't want to be stranded somewhere.
You may get some fault codes out of it but generally DeNox system fault codes are not very helpful or specific, you need to do a full system check normally anyway.
As Richard says you wont to any damage (except to the planet  ) by driving it as the engine does not actually need the ablue to run or operate.
