Berlingo MK2 Wipers going mad

Hi everyone, so I got myself a used Berlingo mk2 recently for cheap, on my way back I noticed wipers are malfunctioning , on all stalk modes they run on medium speed for roughly 5 sec and then stop at random position, imagine how annoying is that when you're driving back home for 2hours in heavy rain and have to "reset" wipers every 5secs, I know most people would say motor self parking is gone... Well a week ago I replaced a whole wipers assembly (including motor), and problem is still there.
What's interesting is the problem only occurs while driving, when car is stationary everything works as supposed, I'm not sure if it's a relay or maybe ECU is fried if ECU even have anything to do with wipers.

Did anyone had similar problem in past ?

It's possibly the control unit under the steering wheel. If this is faulty, changing the wiper motors won't help as you have found.

Please pop your VIN up (automasked on post submission) then I can have a look and check for you.

I think it might be a relay, I have already ordered a replacement, in meantime I was trying to find a relay box but it's well hidden somewhere and Google is not helpful.

From what I can see the engine fuse box has the relays for the wipers and are non user serviceable. There is a control wire to the BSI, but again that's not serviceable. So the only other thing could be the control module at the steering wheel that may have faulty contacts. The contact tracks can wear over the years to the extent they can cause intermittent behaviour (similarly with the indicators).

Which it is, I can't say. Whether you can retrieve a fault code - if it is even logging one as it may not be flagged as a fault if it is just a faulty connection from the stalk control.

I tried scanning for codes but unfortunately nothing showed, I will order new stalk as it might be my only chance as you're saying. I'm surprised autodoc and gsf car parts gave me a option to order replacement relay (car regs search) as it was replaceable.

But thinking about it, I don't know how faulty stalk could make wipers stop at random position as motor should have independent position sensor. I will replace the stalk anyway as at this point I'm clueless 🫤.

As you have a mk2 Berlingo the stalk isnt just a stalk. Its a full control unit known as the com2000 that houses both the wiper & lighting stalks, the airbag rotary connetion, steering angle sensor (on ESP equipped models) & the connection for the immobiliser pickup. If buying new these are very expensive (probably around half the value of the vehicle), several hundred pounds. So would be an expensive guess. If going down the second hand route you need to get one off the same spec of van.

Yes it operates as supposed when engine off, I'm pretty sure that's mk1 it's a 2006 (56plate) with 2.0HDI (90) engine, I know you decoded the vin but all websites I was on before said it is mk1.

By the same spec of van do you mean same Engine, accessories etc ? I'm asking as I recently installed a cruise control stalk and coded it in.

Mk1 - up to around late 2001
Mk2 - 2001 - 2007
Mk3 - 2007 - 2018
Mk4 - 2018 - present

A mk1 would not have had a com2000 unit & the wiper relay would have been replaceable.
You CC stalk can just be fitted into the new com2000 unit. As can your radio controls.
By spec i mean ESP & Rear wiper mainly.

Is it possible that fitting the CC stalk has upset things? Can you date the start of the problem to straight after you added it in?

If the Berlingo uses the same style of CC stalk as the Mk1 C5 I know that there are at least two types that will physically fit in but only one is correct. Are you sure the correct one is fitted?

This is what made me think COM2000 as I've seen all kinds of weird behaviour from them , but of course a Mk1 Berlingo wouldn't have this.

Strange that when I look on ebay for Mk1 wiper stalks, there are hardly any to be found...but there's no shortage of indicator/lighting stalks. You'd expect to see a roughly equal amount of both types, but no...

So problem occured from day one when I purchased that van, that was roughly 3 weeks ago, cc stalk was installed and coded last week and nothing really changed. So it's not the cc stalk for sure.

I was sure it's mk1 for the whole time, thanks for explaining it to me.

So regarding the column switch, I think I will order a whole unit (used), is there anything specific I should pay attention to ? Aren't they coded to vehicle and therefore new one will not work ?

As you car does not have ESP then no programming or coding is required, plug & play. On ESP models the steering angle sensor requires calibrating.
You need to make sure you get one from another van that has no ESP (I think this is quite rare on a Berlingo 2anyway). If your van has rear wipers then you would need on from another van with rear wipers.

When buying a replacement COM2000, my advice would be to get a new one. Marc can probably tell you the exact part number you need. Some COM2000 will have features that don't apply to you, or won't have features that you need.

I wasted a lot of time and money on a 307 I had...chasing imaginary faults which turned out to be caused by defective second-hand units from a scrapyard.

Fitted a new one...no more faults. And I can take off a 307 airbag and steering wheel blindfolded because I did it so many times
