C5 X7 Folding Wing Mirror Motor Replacement

Unread post by marsalek »

Dear colleagues,

on my C5 X7 (=Mk3) one of the power mirrors ceased folding. It "opens" and "closes" only in a limited angle range. Pushing/pulling by hand did not help, the el. motor/gears are stucked somehow. Saw a nice YT video by a slovenian guy how to replace the motor:

Can anyone direct me where to buy the replacement motor? Exact type would help. Europe/Germany/Aliexpress sources are welcome :)

Thaks in advance!
Regards
Karel

He already said that there are none on ebay or Ali Karel - he had to buy a complete mirror unit from a scrap yard / breaker and extract the motor from it. And in case you ask why not just swap the mirror - because there are different mirrors for different years with different functionality.

Hi Marc, thank you for your fast reply! You are always the first here :-)
I got a hint in a german forum that the motor can be bought separately. Already several guys repaired their wing mirrors successfully..

For example the left motor is for about €55,- : https://www.ebay.de/itm/Aussenspiegel-a ... 3206126383

Maybe this helps

Oh well spotted in that case :-D - may help others as I know my mirrors were about £1000 each!

Also these new motors may cost a bit more, but at least you know you are getting a brand new motor and not a used one that may go kaput shortly.

I'm going to move this topic into the How To section as it may help others with the video and links.

Thanks for the info Karel.

If you're prepared to take more of a risk the motor looks to be available on Aliexpress. This seems to be the LH side and there are variations at different prices. All are considerably less than Ebay.

Hi Paul, the prices are definitely interesting! I already bought mine using the link I got in the german forum, so at least I hope this is a proven fit :-) But having one of the Aliexpress ones handy it worth thinking :-)

Karel, could you please post a guide on how to replace the motor once you have completed the task.
I looked into it a few times and could not see a way to separate the motor from the spring, so have up and bought a replacement mirror on ebay. Right year, right colour, lucky or what.
However, not sure you know you can remove the mirror from the car from the outside.

Hi guys, have just changed the folding motor! Everything works perfectly. The only problem was the new motor. On ebay I got a motor with a wrong connector and with missing circuit board inside. I used then only the bare motor and put the tuff together with the old motor. To replace the motor you need to build a special spring removal tool. 3D-STL on request :-) For some images please have a look in the german forum:

There is no spare motor availabile. Thats why I bought one from a broken C5. I think I mentioned that in video ;) I paid 25EUR for whole mirror delivered by post.

Are the links to the motors available on Ebay and AliExpress not correct then?

On Aliexpress search for a motor 1020792. This one was on my C5 III X7 from yr. 2013. At least in my case the rest looked quite robust and I would again change only the bare motor. Given the price, it is a good idea to have one at hand. In the picture you see the original one. Probably the brushes were KO. You can even buy on Ali only the plastic cap with the brushes....

Originaly motor is equiped with a small PCB that do all the current limiting stuff and all together is closed in plastic. That is not availabile as a spare. But If you are sure only bare motor is a problem (usualy is) then It is possible to find some on ebay, AE that fits as a pure replacement. I had no time to look for that but seems some guys found them. For me it was faster and more efficient to use a donor mirror.
