Citroen C5 Heater/cool air fan

OK, I'm confused (again) how do I get the blower fan on mt 2010 C5 to stay on?

Currently the aircon isn't working (awaiting an appointment with my local expert) and as far as I can tell is switched off.

When I first start the car the fan comes on at what seems like full power for about 10 seconds and then switches off.

Man, this dashboard is mad I'd just like to be able to blow some air around the cab

Any thoughts?

You haven't stated what system you have - Dual or mono climate control?

Assuming you have the dual zone system (with separate controls for driver and passenger), then you will have to manually use the fan control to increase the blower output. If you have it on AUTO then it will take over the air distribution and mixing controls to reach the requested temperature - but of course in this case if your A/C compressor is not engaging this will never happen.

The system in Auto mode gradually increases the blower speed to reach the desired settings, but if the A/C is not working it can affect the system. So best not to use AUTO mode until you have the A/C sorted.

Just use the manual controls to change the air direction, temperature and blower speed.

thanks Marc, that's what I assumed - yes, it is the duo zone and yes, it's on manual
but nothing seems to increase the blower speed to how it is at first - will try some more fiddling/trial and error

Marc, is there an official description of the auto system? I know it:

• will try to get to the programmed temperature as quick as possible

• adjust the three vents as required to achieve the first point

• uses recirulate when either the reverse gear is selected or the washers are activated

But when it's trying to adjust the cabin temperature, does it turn to recirculate as well, then does it also adjust the recirculate flap during normal operation to cut down the load required by the A/C pump to save fuel.?

In AUTO mode the system controls partial or full air recirculation mode. When this happens, will depend on what the air quality sensor itself is detecting. Mostly these are oxidising and reducing gases (NOx & CO).

So it is autonomous in AUTO mode.

Air intake function in AUTO Mode

• The air conditioning system can control partial or total air recirculation.
• The air conditioning system does not force the intake of exterior air at 100 %.
• The passenger compartment air recirculation control is pressed, the AUTO mode is not deactivated, the control of the air intake alone is modified.

See below for what the different modes are depending on the mode of the recirculation button when pressed:

"w" Symbol for automatic control of the air intake with taking into account of the air quality.
"x" Symbol for forced recirculation.
"y" Symbol for automatic control of the air intake without taking into account of the air quality.

Also, note:

When one of the two "AUTO" mode buttons is pressed, both the driver’s side and the passenger’s side switch to "AUTO" mode.
When both sides are in "AUTO" mode, pressing one of the "AUTO" mode buttons only permits the resumption of manual control on the side on which the button was pressed, the other side remains in "AUTO" mode.

I'm still getting nowhere with this. When I first start the car, there is a strong blast of air through the vents which lasts about 5 seconds, then it slows to a trickle - nothing I do with fan speeds has any effect

A long shot but if the fan speed is maintained, could it be the flaps misbehaving and sending the air in the wrong vents, or even recirculating the air and the pollen filter is clogged?

I've ordered a new pollen filter - the car had just been to Spain and back before I bought it so it's not unreasonable to assume it's a bit clogged - thanks for your thoughts

well, same as before. The fan gives a good blast then cuts back. New pollen filter made no difference (apart from being a PITA to replace) the blower is really weak. Aircon refill has been put off for a couple of weeks until I can get replacement pipes as it's been previously bodged (very badly) by a previous owner
