My fab Pug Partner Combi Mk1 (the early one) has an annoying rattle which I'm certain is coming from the exhaust. It rattles in first when turning left, pulling away at junctions. There was a post somewhere that suggested this was a worn engine mount allowing the engine to pull the exhaust into contact with the heat shield. Is it likely to be the rear or top mount? Would the gearbox mount affect this?
Cheers
Mike

You really need to take a look at it. May just be a simple as bending the heat shield a little bit to clear the exhaust or the heat shied is loose?

Thanks wheeler, I noticed the heatshield was close to the exhaust in the centre, after I did the head gasket, so bent it back as far as I could. The shield isn't loose. It sounds like it's hitting something a little more solid than the shield, experience has taught me that could also be misleading. I'll get it jacked up tomorrow and give it a good jiggle about.

2001 Partner exhaust rattle turning and more fun
A quick update
Did the PS front wheel bearing, invested in a bearing driver set to compliment the bench press making the procedure more rewarding. The DS bearing needs doing but the previous owner partly stripped the female torx bolts on the calliper carrier. I managed to finish b*gg*ring them with a blow torch and a new bit, so have to remove the stripped bolts. It's been heated, pen fluid bath and the grinder will be out tomorrow. While doing this, I noticed the lower engine mount has perished slightly and looks like it's not holding as it should so will be the next on the shopping list to sort the exhaust rattle on sharp turns.
When grinding these carrier bolts should I just cut the top off or grind the sides square and attempt to remove them fully, without having to drill the rest out?
Was hoping to have the bearing done before Saturday for a long trip to collect my son from his holly-bobs, now need to focus on the Focus which has a slight misfire instead... I've a new thermostat it needs but not going to risk cracking the housing before the drive so, have spark plugs I wanted to fit a couple of services ago - best place to start tomorrow, get it running a bit better with some Redex for the trip and then back to working on the pug.
The engine on the pug is working really well since the head gasket, the last one was changed by a chimp - copper grease on stretched bolts and the first torque not done right. Need to sort the idle control though, it's 1100 when up to temp and the ECG valve needs properly blocked too since the lower tube was snapped by prev owner and I don't want to fork out for a replacement.

Rounded torx bolts
Used the grinder to flatten the sides and used a long reach 16mm spanner and block mallet to get it moving. It shifted slightly but then rounded off, so ground it down to around 15.5mm, hammered on the rounded bolt extractor, used a 22mm socket and my 650Nm mains torque wrench to release the little pest. Ground the other one down to allow me to drive a 17mm socket on and again with the impact wrench.
Calliper hub bolts 0 - Impact wrench 2 I've not yet found anywhere other than a dealer who sell these bolts for quick purchase, so may just have to be patient. I've forgotten the part no but they're M12x1.5 36mm long. Landrovers and Golf Mk2s use 35mm which would probably do the job with a proper 17mm hex top.

Exhaust rattling I thought was due to a worn rear engine mount, but recently replaced the drive shaft and found it's still in good condition. Replaced the gearbox mount. The upper mount looks perished so got a new one and think it will raise the engine a few mm and solve the issue where the exhaust is fowling somewhere near the subframe. Watch this space, hope to have an update tomorrow.

Yeh, this wasn't anything to do with mounts or exhaust, it was very badly worn CV joints. Both driveshafts replaced - knocking gone. Amazed it wasn't highlighted on the MOTs.
