I have a 98 hatch Xsara and have a damp rear edge on my carpet
sometimes. If I use the hose on the car I see no water ingress. I
wonder if it is condensation running down from the rear window and
onto the trim then into the boot though it may well be from outside.

The rear seal / trim that is on the boot hatch (on the car) is some times not that tight when the boot is shut and you get a little but often water ingress. This leads to a damp carpet. I think the only way is to adjust the rear boot lock so it's a little tighter on the seals. Not to much as you may not be able to shut the boot. Slightly slacken the clamp on the boot lip and adust then re-tighten. To dry out if you ain't got a garage try some news paper under and on top of the carpet this will soak up the moisture.
