xantia - non starter

Post by shaunthesheep »

my brother in law has got a problem with his 2.0Ltr diesel L reg xantia. the problem happened on friday night, when he turned off the engine for about 30mins, when he returned to the car, it wouldnt start. it had sounded like the battery was flat, but on checking the normal tell tale signs eg wipers, lights etc. all were normal, we tried to jump start it, but we had no luck. to me it sounded like the starter motor was knacked. it would engauge, but not start it. it only did one turn. any more ideas?

Hi Shaun -
If the starter for some reason (battery, cabling etc.) does not get adequate power, then the starter would tend to clatter in the engage coil.
My guess the starter has reached end of service life, i.e. worn brushes. Often the starter would then crank happily either when cold or if you tap the starter housing with a large screwdriver.
