Hydraulic Tank

Unread post by peter306 »

Hello all,
My hydraulic tank (Xantia 1.8) is bowed where the filter seal fits and is not sealing properly, I have been searching the forum as I know this has been answered but can't find it.
What is the sealant used to make a good seal. I believe CitroJim said to use a specific sealant.

I've used polyurethane products such as tigerseal to seal in oil in other contexts, perhaps that might work in this applicaiton?

I had this problem when I had a Xantia. I fixed it successfully as follows, though the details are now very hazy.

I inserted a length of 110mm plastic drainage pipe in the tank, something like 150mm long, so that it goes top to bottom, and made with a vertical split so that it can be reduced or increased in diameter. The size is easiest determined with the tank empty so that you can check where it will sit inside. You measure and estimate the height it needs to be so that the top and bottom of the tank will be held parallel.

Make up the bit of pipe as above, coil it slightly to fit it through, then spring it out enough to locate. My memory is that it located round the lip inside the main aperture and was quite stable. Now when the lid/filter part is replaced, the force of the holding clip is supported rather than caving the tank in towards one side, and thus the seal once more works properly. I recall that it did not interfere with the filter, and that the slot when fitted expands to be big enough for free circulation of fluid, but all of the above needs to be checked carefully. It does avoid sealant which is never much fun on something that needs to come off periodically.

I've used Loctite SI 5980 for many years with excellent results to seal that pesky leaky top of the LHM reservoir. It is a black silicone sealant specifically developed for automotive and agricultural applications on flanges and joints, and is oil resistant too.

Do make sure both surfaces are thoroughly clean before applying the stuff.

Available from Halfords among other places.

Thanks for the answers, Ted is easier but I do like Thorters, aesthetically pleasing. :)
