Manufacturer install incorrect Battery?

Post by the_wondering_owl »

Hi All,

I have a 2014 C3 Picasso 1.6 Diesel

I had a flat battery this morning and ordered myself a new one from halfords (they show up HSB013 as the recommended one for the car given the number plate)

This is a 60Ah CCA of 640A which matches the battery spec in my car

However i noticed that the battery in the car is a EF type (which i thought was for start/stop, my car does not have any start top so am confused as to why its in there (i had the car from new and have never changed the battery)

The full details of the existing battery are : Fiamm 12V L2 EF 60Ah 640A (EN)

Just curious as to if my new halfords battery is ok given its not a EF type and why Citroen would have put in a EF (stop start type battery) My only guess it to reduce the parts count on new builds but this seems over kill as EF batteries are quite a bit more expensive right?

Maybe this is why i have managed to get 8 years out of a car without changing the battery ever !

Appreciate any thoughts

Cheers
Martin

Don't worry about it, EF batteries were introduced to save costs on AGM batteries as they can do more or less the same job with existing wet flooded tech. You can get about 85k engine starts out of an EFB, compared to 30k starts from standard flooded product and they are designed to have greater cyclic durability especially where you will have lower charge states as in Stop Start tech. So whether you have Stop & Start or not, you'll still be getting a decent battery.

thanks for the response Marc. So i have actually purchased this battery:

This is actually a decent replacement for battery that was in the car origionally (which i believe is a Stop/Start battery in a car with No Stop Start)

A few years back PSA started putting the battery spec on the bottom of the tyre pressure label.
As you can see this one is 720a EN & it was a regular flooded battery. If it was EFB or AGM it says this after the amps rating.
You can fit an EFB or AGM to a vehicle that was fitted with a regular flooded but personally I would only fit these if the car needed to have them. I my experience EFB & AGM dont have anywhere near the same lifespan as regular flooded batteries. I know you got 8 years out of yours right enough but im basing this on a lot of battery replacements.
You wont go wrong with Yuasa batteries either, the best there is in my experience without a doubt.

That battery will be fine if you don't have the Stop Start system. These are a good brand as Wheeler says. With most recent vehicles having Stop Start systems they just trend to fit EF batteries as they are less expensive than AGM tech and can do pretty much the same job.

Yuasa have an interesting history, I recall them taking over Lucas but they're a big old lot.

many thanks for all your answers guys ! I did check the side door where the tyre pressure data is and no mention of EFB or AGM after the amp rating. thanks for putting my mind at ease
