Just purchased a ‘97 ZX, some quick questions.

Unread post by GMZX »

Hi new poster here and back to retro Citroens after years with Escorts and Cavaliers.

I’ve just bought a ‘97 ZX 1.4i SX with 81k. It’s a lovely car bodywork wise but I want to improve the driving experience if I can. Firstly the accelerator pedal seems a bit hard, like there is a brick underneath it. It’s been 23 years since I last drove one so is this simply how they are or can I rectify this with a new throttle cable?

Also there’s a bit of a loud ticking/knocking when I move off. I’m suspecting driveshafts. A reasonably easy fix??

Also there’s quite a lot of travel on the brakes before they begin to bite? Is there any way to improve this?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I’ll be doing most work myself but might have to use the local Citroen specialist for some stuff.

Check that the throttle butterfly in the engine bay moves freely first, if thats ok you could try removing & lubricating the cable, drip some light oil down it whilst working it in and out.

Long travel on the pedal is probably the 'auto' adjusters on the rear brakes - they were never great, and if someone's been therefore they're probably totally messed up!

Drive shafts shouldn't be too hard, but it will depend on how easy the strut pinch bolts come out, sometimes, they can put up a real fight!!
