C3 anti roll bar Bush clip

Post by c.morewood »

I have inherited a 2008 C3. The anti roll bar Bush has deteriorated so I've sourced another however the clip which holds the ARB, similar to the Xantias is clipped in at one end and held with a bolt at the other end.
The ARB clip has popped out and I'm unable to remove the bolt due to it having been crimped at the end. I don't have enough room to cut the bolt. I therefore can't get the new Bush to stay in place. It seems to be a really stupid design. Perhaps the bolt is crimped so it won't fall out if it does become loose but this is preventing the bolt being removed.
I'm sure other C 3 owners will have come across this scenario.
Any suggestions?

Procedure says to remove the bolt then the clamp, so it should come out, not sure what has happened to yours...

Sounds like corrosion on the exposed threads, on the c2 forum someone was getting at the bolts from above using lots of extensions, lots of penetrating oil, and winding back a few turns when things get stiff.

I know what you mean Stewart. I had the same with the Xantia, first time. After that I used a small piece of hose pipe packed with grease to fit on (all of) the exposed threads to stop it happening again. These C3 bolts are actually pinched ruining the threads, it must've been done at the manufacturing stage Richard, as you can't get to them easily and so won't rotate out completely. I think it's going to be a complete dis assembly of the wishbone and suspension to try to cut the head off, just to get at one clip.. so frustrating!!

Well settled for the less expensive option of fitting another subframe( ARB already attached). It was that or scrapping the car.
Thanks for the advice

So with the old subframe on the floor, do you think you could get those fastenings apart ? well done for the lateral thinking fix BTW.

It's the least expensive option Stewart.. the car isn't worth much having spent almost all it's life sitting outside within 20 feet of the sea. It's a hard life up here being bathed in sea salt almost every day.
I'm expecting to have to pay out for extra drop links and a bottom ball on the wishbone if I'm lucky resulting from the subframe change. I spoke to the guy who's doing it for me.. the only other option was cutting into the sub frame and welding a new piece in.. but would have still resulted in as much, if not more, disruption.. just to keep the car running for another couple of years ... there is no way to get that bolt out he assured me. Work starts this week with hopefully an MOT next week.
