So I have drained 100ml oil from my 79k 2004 diesel auto (AL4). Grey colour not blackish, no suspicious smell, no bits in sample. So far so good.
Question: I have read through the change procedure, and would love to hear from one our enlighteners what size the square filler plug is, and how on earth do you access it!
I have removed the cabin filter box (anyone know the identity of the zeus fasteners which are now somewhere behind the starter..) and I can feel the filler plug hidden behind the gearshift cable
but would like to know what type of tool is recommended and how you persuade oil to get in the filler hole!
Once more unto the breach!!

Re: C8 auto gearbox filler size and access!!
Which guide did you use Pete? I haven't yet put one up for the C8 with AL4 in the Resources section as yet, and there was also a modification made later on which may have some bearing.
Let me know if you need this - it will take me about 30 minutes to convert and format if this will help.

Re: C8 auto gearbox filler size and access!!
Patched from The AL4 Citroen "Technical training presentation of the AL4 Automatic transmission" which I downloaded from a link somewhere on this site, which gives all the requisite temps, engine running etc, and the answer you gave to my first ever post! So I can figure the doing, just the actual access and filler plug size which I could do with some experienced info on!GiveMeABreak wrote: 23 Mar 2022, 17:50 Which guide did you use Pete? Anything relevant would be very useful, thanks

Re: C8 auto gearbox filler size and access!!
The filler plug is an 8mm square. You will need a funnel & some tubing for filling it up or the (very expensive) oil will end up all over the top of the gearbox.
Take note of the following in the pic below, Do not confuse the filler plug with this big bolt 3 (think it's a big torx from memory). If you undo this a part of the gearbox internals drops down inside the box

I could see from the Citroen diagram it was square, and was anticipating 10mm, hence puzzled when my usual trick of using a 3/8" (9.5mm) socket set driver didn't fit!
Out with funnel and tube then!

I'm intrigued about the modification made later on, Marc. What was it, please do you know?GiveMeABreak wrote: 24 Mar 2022, 09:19 As you seem to have what you need I'll leave the other info then Pete.

Re: C8 auto gearbox filler size and access!!
It says I do not have authorisation to read this post, is it hidden for some reason (post numbers either side work OK) - EDIT - nevermind, it's open after donating.
Incidentally, I'm here as I was also wondering where the fill plug is. I found a black plastic plug with 2 Torx bolts behind the nearside wheel. I had read some older models had a filler behind the wheel but mine's a 56 plate C8 so I'm guessing the filler is already deleted and this is some sort of blanking plug for a sensor - removing the airbox looks like a pig of a job as I have to undo the screws to slide some sort of radiator out of it and the access is... minimal, it's easier to get the 1.6 hdi airbox out!
BTW all this is because when the car is cold and idling it drips ATF for about 5 mins till it warms up from somewhere up above the big hard plastic cooling pipe near middle of engine and what's worse is it's red and my understanding is LT71141 isn't supposed to be red

Re: C8 auto gearbox filler size and access!!
Some manual boxes have a level plug on the side accessed through the wheel arch but the (AL4) auto boxes have the filler on the top & the drain/level plugs on the bottom.MixerFistit wrote: 17 Apr 2022, 18:23 I had read some older models had a filler behind the wheel but mine's a 56 plate C8 so I'm guessing the filler is already deleted and this is some sort of blanking plug for a sensor -

Re: C8 auto gearbox filler size and access!!
Fair enough, that must've been what I (mis)read.
The black plug must be a sensor blank then.
Few bits to do on the car but I think the autobox is the priority.
Am I right in assuming red ATF will definitely be the wrong stuff? I'm sure I read somewhere the LT 71141 looks more like regular oil but I can't find the post now. I'm going to need a lot of it if I have to push all the wrong stuff out over a few fill and drains

Re: C8 auto gearbox filler size and access!!
Yes, the right stuff looks more like engine oil. If the fluid is red its likley someone has put regular ATF in.
