C5 x7 steering rack mounting stud torque

Unread post by aerodynamica »

My newly fitted steering rack had gone loose! I don't think the garage tightened the 2 fixings properly (after wrecking the rack I supplied them)

Mentioned in this blog: viewtopic.php?&t=70118&p=712279#p712279

But I could do with finding the torque setting as soon as poss.

I've re tightened them but don't know the torque they are meant to be. It's there supposed to be threadlock?

Why was there never a Haynes book for the C5!

I thought he’d want the subframe as they loosen that to do the rack.

Ha, now I'm thinking I'll have to check ALL of these. I see they're all single use and nine of mine looked new so I think they've reused all of these.

Out of interest, do PSA offer a car kit of those must-be-replaced nuts and bolts? Or do you have to buy them individually in stupid pack sizes?

There's no kit shown, but like some of these other small fixings, they may have a minimum order quantity which is not generally shown, so if the dealer doesn't have any in stock and it's not a common part, they may charge you for the lot as happened to some fixings I ordered years ago.

Exactly what I was getting at.

Back in the day when I was involved with Austin/Rover classic cars when we ordered from Austin/Rover the unit of issue was always printed (yes printed - hard copy!) next to the unit price. I take there's no such help from PSA online?

We would buy in these inconvenient quantities and break them down so we could sell fixing kits for various panels, etc with the correct quantity of everything. Very popular they were.

No nothing to indicate min. order qty. - only the single price is given (so they know what to charge the customer per unit).

The loose steering rack is so far holding out and the symphony of knocks from the front end are now all but gone save for a minor rattle that I think are the drop links beginning to show wear.

While I was under the front with the undertray removed to tighten the rack mountings I took the opportunity to snap a shot of the new steering rack in place and the modified rubber CV gaiter that covers the weak point at the steering pinion valve.

You can see in the picture how the gaiter covers the pinion valve housing completely and then goes through the aperture in the driver's footwell and is held on the inside by the large rubber bung that closes the aperture. The CV gaiter it held tight around the edge and completely seals off the pinion valve and the troublesome cardan shaft that rusts so badly. YOu can even see here that there has been water spray that has hit the CV gaiter instead of the steering shaft.

I really hope this CV gaiter cover is the solution I'm hoping and that this solves the problem of the C5 steering rack.

I think a few others have done similar mods but over a few years back - any reports now on how it helped?
