Picasso 2004 airbag fault

Unread post by bighairybloke »

New to me Picasso, has a fault indicated by the computer. The airbag light goes out ok.
I have another scrap Picasso that has no issues with its airbag. What’s the easiest solution to resolve this fault peeps? I can swap parts..

I'm not sure I understand what the actual fault is Steve?

The Airbag light is supposed to come on when you start the vehicle as it runs a self-check, then should go out. You said above it goes out ok. :-k

Hi mate, the light goes out fine but once started, the display shows airbag fault.
Cheers

Ok, so really needs a diagnostic to ascertain the issue, but possible suspect is the wire under the carpet of the passenger side floor. This can be the culprit, but get a diagnostic first and be careful not to connect anything electrical to the Airbag circuit.

You really need to do a diagnostic check on the airbag system first to at least give you a hint at what parts to swap, it could be loads of things.

Will dig out my l’expia. Been ages since I last used it!
This is a LHD car by the way. It is odd that the light comes on and then goes out. But when started even without touching steering wheel it brings up the fault. It goes away and comes back periodically. I tried banging on the steering wheel and that doesn’t bring the error up and the light never comes back on neither.

Ok. Thanks for that. The clock spring unit is at fault. I removed the one off another car, but it didn’t have esp, and this one does…so I have a socket missing! Now wondering if I can transplant just the clock spring from the spares car to this unit?

Not something i've tried but you have a spare one to practice on so have nothing to loose by taking it apart for a look. The rotary connector may just be plugged onto a circuit board for all we know?

Fixable but you need a lot of patience with the fiddly bits.
The flat ribbon is too fine to do much with so if that's broken....................................... :(

I’ve got it open but struggling to find where the break is. The two wires going to the air bag seem linked together.
However I have discovered there is a bag plate to the spring unit that has cogs on it… I am suspecting that this is the missing esp unit from the other one… hopefully I can put this unit into the working one and be up and running….

It’s very odd. There is only one air bag plug for this unit but two sockets. Is this correct for this car?

Some models have 2 stage igniters that can deploy the airbags at different force levels depending on the severity of impact. On Models without this the wiring is normally still present on the com2000 unit but the extra connector just plugs into a dummy hole on the opposite side of the airbag. Saves them manufacturing 2 different comms units.
