I'm working on a 308 hdi 90. When I came to change the timing belt, it's a bit difficult. Because the engine is a 9HY 110 originally, and the flywheel has been swapped for the non DMF 90 one, there is no guarantee that the locking hole in the flywheel is in the right place. The flywheel isn't keyed to the crank.
Are there any other marks to use to check the crank alignment ? Obviously the cam alignment with a pin is the easy bit !
I've also heard some scary rumours about the timing chain jumping teeth, but will just have to keep my fingers crossed on that one.

Re: 1.6 hdi timing marks
Trying to recall if there's a hole near the starter motor which will need moving , goodluck on that , then use a long size 6 0r 8 drill bit if the fronts lined up correctly the bit should drop into the locking hole in the gearbox end which is the dual mass fly wheel this should then mean timing is lined up, don't the pump have marks too ? Trying to remember when my engine had work done last year. Sorry cant be much better than this.
Husky.

Re: 1.6 hdi timing marks
The 2 litre has a hole by the flywheel. The 1.6 hole is low down. Both of these lock the flywheel. If the flywheel has been replaced, there is no reason that this hole would be in the right place, as there is no key for it.

Re: 1.6 hdi timing marks
On the 1.6 HDi the hole in the flywheel is only for locking the flywheel to loosen the crank pulley bolt, it is not a timing hole. There is a timing alignment hole on the pickup ring for the crank sensor, you wont see the timing hole till you remove the crank pulley. A small drill bit should work fine.

I've heard scary stories about the timing chain jumping teeth. Is this common ?

Re: 1.6 hdi timing marks
Early 1.4 HDi engines (which are very similar to the 1.6) had issues with the little cam chain tensioner but there was a recall to sort this.
On the DV6 engines the only time i have seen any issues with the Little camshaft timing chain is due to a timing belt failure.

If it's really worn, then turning the engine backwards during a cambelt change can result in a bad day... https://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/ ... p?p=323069

Re: 1.6 hdi timing marks
OK, I wont panic too much then, as the engine is claimed to only have covered 65K, and it's a 1.6. I'll just double check the timing belt and get on with refitting everything !

Hole behind the timing reluctor ing is easily found and very obvious - thanks !

Re: 1.6 hdi timing marks
I have had murder with this engine. I locked it with a flywheel tooth tool which lined up the cam and HPFP timing pins but the crank gear timing hole was about 90°-130° advanced where it appeared to have been meant to be locked.
Under time pressure and massive stress to get the engine back together I took the cog lock off the flywheel and timed it up with the pin. Top end wrecked as expected!
Is there an official way to time the DV6TD4 16v bottom end up or do I just have a freak engine? It probably has the official flywheel on if that helps.

Re: 1.6 hdi timing marks
As Wheeler says above, the timing pin should be on the crank nose behind the pulley. As I recall it's at 12 o'clock. It may be that someone has been there before and moved the sprocket for some reason.

Re: 1.6 hdi timing marks
On this engine the hole in the flywheel is purely just to lock the crank to loosen the crank pulley bolt, The flywheel lock is not for setting the timing. The plate under the crank pulley that has the hole for timing is also the the magnetic reluctor ring pickup for the crank position sensor, if this wasn't fitted correctly the engine would never have ran.

Re: 1.6 hdi timing marks
I dont think there is any dowel or alignment for the flywheel, so if someone has replaced it the flywheel locking hole hole could be anywhere.
Reluctor ring behind the aux drive pulley (visible with aux pulley removed) has a hole that lines up with a hole behind. Cam pulley has a hole to align too. I didnt grab pictures, sorry !
