Help Needed - Strange Noise / Dirt on wheel

Unread post by justboy85 »

Hi,

I have a 2008 Peugeot 207 CC (84k miles) that I haven't had long and it's giving me some grief! Might be a silly question but the car is making a strange whirring/grinding noise from rear left when in low gears - both accelerating and breaking.

I've also noticed there is dirt on the rear left wheel and that hub cap etc only?

It also take a little encouragement to get out of first like it's a little stuck. I don't know a lot about cars so any help would be great so I can budget for repairs and know how serious it is?

Hi, and :welc: to the Forum.

I would guess that the wheel bearing might be on the way out (the grease can dry out over a very long time). A simple test would be to make sure the car cannot move by chocking the wheels (but leave the handbrake off and in neutral), jack each wheel up in turn, and then turn each wheel by hand. They should turn relatively smoothly. Any that do not need further investigation. If it is a wheel bearing on the way out this needs to be done as a matter of urgency, as a failed wheel bearing can cause that wheel to seize, which (especially on a motorway) can make for an 'interesting' driving experience.

Have you drove through deep floods at all ? That can cause all types of hassles gear linkages will fail after getting wet then drying on regular heavy bad weather driving , rear sounds bearing related id check the brakes too aswell as brake discs dont leave the bearing get it done they will fail and do more damage ,, do as hellrazor5543 said the rumble test . Gear linkages sounds like its just starting if your competent home mechanic it can be done it is a pain in the butt... if you can find a small work for themselves mechanic and sorce the part yourself.. ebay ... your save a lot of money.. Good luck..
