C4 Conked Out Faults Logged

Unread post by Doo »

Hi Gentlemen & ladies. As per subject, 07 Citroën C4 1.6hdi SX 95k miles. Cut out, management light, etc. I have to go by what I was told. Car started & drove no bother, light stayed on.

Diag said,
F406 oil pressure fault, no reason for fault
P1351 pre heat, ghost fault, well known
P0192 Diesel pressure signal, I think it goes in tandem with the next one... GEP fault reading
C1210 fault engine running

I also found a power steering fault, but forgot to snap the pic.

I decided to check the battery using my few months old digital tester and it shows the alternator is putting out 14.16v/14.24v under load (lights, heater fan, heated screen, radio, etc). Can't find a reason for the wavering between the low and high side of the voltages. The belt is around a year old or thereabout and is a decent make. Can still see the red and white print as it runs.

Battery engine off started at 13.42v and sixty seconds later was at 13.16v with door open and interior light on. However, a loud buzzing, which I always took to be the clutch system parking, went on for longer than normal (usually lasts around 10 seconds). This time it was closer to 25 seconds. Definitely electronic. Just never bothered to investigate what it was. Done it since we got the car circa 2012/13.

This is the first time this car has actually caused any issues. Battery seems fine. Did lights on engine off test 60 seconds battery started at 12.42v and dropped to 12.34v so while I suspect it may be worn, I'm not convinced it's causing the issues. I'm leaning towards a poor connection at the engine bsi (I forgot the correct term) as we had an issue few years back when it was filled with leaves. It looks ok, but I have to check the fuses again and see if this is a possible cause.

Any heads up would be appreciated.

Thanks, Doo :)

Gee, I'm a bit overwhelmed at the responses...Lol :-P

Anyway, took the car for a blast and even tried to recreate the circumstances by driving to & from the shop my wife went to to fetch, of all things, roofing felt tacks for the new shed!

Drove like my wife (carefully but not tragically slow) and did the exact route, but it didn't happen. The car is as the diag suggested, exemplary and in good working condition.

I tested EVERY system, sub system, sub, sub, sub, sub system to the turbo pressure and fuel pressure systems. NO issues whatsoever and that's decent for a 14 year old car on it's original turbo and clutch.

I'm at a loss as to why the car peed it's pants yesterday but all I can think of is an electrical glitch of some sort. So as previously suggested, I will have to check the BSM and all the connections therein.

I'll keep you informed of my progress....or lack thereof!

Ok, so as for F406 - that points to a faulty Oil Pressure Switch / either the switch or a connection, There are no warnings for this. The fault may be intermittent so may not log a permanent fault. See table below for possibilities.

As for P0192, that relates to a poor contact of the high pressure fuel sensor connector and requires a replacement of the connector / harness.

The C1210 fault is because the engine running signal is disconnected while the vehicle is moving - so as a result of the engine stalling or cutting out and the vehicle is moving, so the power steering electropump is started for safety as a backup mode.
Fault Code: F406
Description of Fault: Oil pressure sensor fault.

Possibility 1
engine running - Oil pressure alert information
Possibility 2
Engine stopped - Information on absence of oil pressure alert
Possibility 3
Absence of communication with the engine fuse box
Conditions for Fault to clear: Possibility 1
engine running - Information on absence of oil pressure alert
Possibility 2
Engine stopped - Oil pressure alert information
Possibility 3
Communication with the engine fusebox established
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: -
Symptoms: None Obvious, No Warning Lamp
Suspect Areas:
  • Built-in systems interface
  • Connector
  • Oil pressure switch
  • Electrical harness

Just based on P0192 I would replace the fuel filter as a matter of course unless you know it was replaced recently.

There was a TSB for the P0192 on this engine which basically states replacement of the connector if this fault appears.

That may be so but basics first, a partially clogged fuel filter could also flag this fault. I wouldn't even entertain investigating this (or any other fuel pressure related faults) any further unless I knew the fuel filter was sound & the fuel quality was good.

As Marc says there is a TSB for the rail pressure sensor connector.
There is or at least was a repair kit availible with a new pig tail connector.
I have various repair handbooks and wiring diagrams for C5 mk1, Xantia, XM, Berlingo and C3 mk1.
I have Lexia/Diagbox (Sweden) and Servicebox/sedre

Hi all, did a proper engine service last weekend and the car is clean inside & out :-D

I emptied the old diesel filter and the fuel was clean as a whistle. We only put BP Ultimate in the tank so I can't imagine it being a bad fuel issue as I would have suffered a similar fate...

The car seems to be running well since I first deleted the codes and checked through the whole system for errors.

Thanks all....

I'll let you know if anything crops up 8-)

Uh ohh... It conked out again. Luckily it was 10 metres from home and it started again. and drove home.

I went out and saw the car come it & heard the engine dropping the odd beat (tugging as my wife described it :-D ) so it's absolutely fuel related. My thoughts are the rail pressure sensor is under the plastic tray where it most definately lets water through and I suspect it hits the sensor connector. So if they are a known issue, I wonder if it is caused by water seeping in? :wtf:

Plugged in and as I suspected, the lack of management light was backed up by no codes (other than the usual ghost code for the heater plugs).

So the next question, is this a part they will discount or will it be a fortune and I suspect only avaiable from a dealership

Guess who will be Lingoless tomorrow as she is scared to drive the C4 in case it lets her down on the dual carriageway :?

Even worse, I just necked the Lingo with fuel ](*,)

If the fault is a poor connection of the fuel pressure sensor you may be able to replicate the fault by wiggling the connector while the engine is running, if you can get to it of course.

Ha ha, funny guy :-D Have you seen where the fuel rail is

Seriously though, I agree about the wiggling thing. Alas it's hosing it down. Sleet, snow, rain, freeeeeeezing rain! So, I declined the idea of getting soaked again. Mate arrived in a panic. His van (he's a locksmith) was damaged due to someone (him :rofl2: ) reversing into another van during a blizzardy bit of snow. The rear doors were buckled and it wouldn't close properly or lock.... Not a great advert for a locksmith. So I sat and got 90% of the bends, buckles and twists out so that not only did it close, it locked and sealed. He was delighted enough to offer a bottle of Scotch.... Just ONE you miserable bastard :-D

So, tomorrow I will mostly be messing with a Citroen C4 and calling the local st....Dealership.

Called local dealer, explained to the parts guy the few codes we had and told the TSB said about a new harness section.

Looked it up, yep! New harness repair section £47 and odd pence

Forty seven quid for a plug and two wires!!!!

Be here Monday as long as that clown, Doris, doesnt upset, Vlad, beforehand and we all end up as dust :?

Ok, so all parts should be in today. Chain, plug for pressure sensor, clutch kit, etc. I have the other parts, timing belt and such. However, it's looking like I'll need to buy a tool just to do the chain

Anyone have experience of these engines? I've done the belt on a couple, but never had to do the chain so will I "neeeeed" the tool or is there a workaround?

Thanks :)

Are you talking about the little chain between the 2 camshafts? Cant think ive ever used any special tools for changing them apart from the normal ones for initially setting the timing belt. There should be marks on the sprockets & they line up with different coloured links on the chain.
