1.6 hdi dispatch no crank

Post by markt1 »

Hello guys I jumped in my dispatch after it's been stood 2 weeks no crank and I couldn't even connect with my little El cheapo reader that has always connected.
I've got no heater blower no main lights just side lights.
I've tried resetting bsi main lights worked but still no crank and anti pollution on dash cowling for my efforts lol.
Reset again antipollution gone windows working still no crank.
But main lights dud just side lights.
I'm stumped do I try a secondhand BSI or scrap it, shame I'm not one to give in so I'd like to have a bit more tinkering.
I can get a mate with planet but if I can't connect that won't I reckon.
I think it is some control module with lights working than not and windows.
Any help appreciated
Regards Mark

There's a fuse that can sometimes blow and cause this not saying its yours as it sounds to me as if your battery is totally dead , even with little charge left it may be possible no to power the bsi enough to start your car, back to this fuse its got a name SHUNT fuse its different in colour & look, check your car to see or find where or if it has such.,, Also camshaft sensors can play up too , going now im waffling hope it helped a bit & good luck hope you get it sorted if so pop your results on here it helps others with the same issues

To recap

Battery passed its best ?
Alternator ?
Camshaft sensor?
Shunt fuse dirty locations ... earth points ....
Even a failing starter motor can give similar issues
Make sure all connections to all above are clean and tight

I would hazard a guess that the windows (& some of the other interior electrics) not working may just due to the van being in ECO mode so dont rule out this being a red herring. If this is the case the other elecrical faults should rectify themselves when the van starts.
Assuming the battery is in good condition the next thing to check is definitely all fuses inside & under bonnet. remember there are a row of maxi fuses under the under bonnet fusebox to have to lift up to get to. If all fuses ok unplug all the connectors on the under bonnet fusebox & check for any signs of water ingress. On the Dispatch the fusebox is placed conveniently right under the scuttle panel to help direct water directly on to it.
You can check the starter operation by disconnecting the 6 way grey connector (its actually classed as yellow as the underside is yellow) on the under bonnet fusebox & feeding pin 2 (on the harness side) with 12v. Do this with the ignition on & it may well start.
Before attempting this make sure the gearbox is in neutral & handbrake firmly on or you might find the van on top of you

There is no cranking, if it was an air lock the starter would still operate & attempt to start.

Hi guys
All fuses checked all connecters checked in fuse and bsi under dash and outer fuse box under hood all clean all ok.....battery good voltage checked with my meter and power running down into that fuse box under bonnet 12V.
I've done multiple bsi resets some bring up antipollution warning on dash sometimes it just says economy mode.......now I have all my lights and indicators and radio works so I can sit on my drive listening to jonnny cash LOL but still no crank.
It's on my pebbled drive virtually impossible to to jack up and check starter power, I've admitted defeat I'm a car painter although I started on the spanners 35 years ago but we had points back then and feeler gauges not all this electronic 🤬 they install today so I've got a auto electrician dropping by thursday morning so we shall see what the crack is boys......thursday will mean life or death for this one she's 12 years old and been nothing but a PITA if I'm honest.
I've eyed my next van up a Peugeot expert :rofl2:

Fingers crossed for you, issues ive had like this in the past for me ended up being something so simple, But not always and yes the over complicated electrics are a joke

My earlier post explains how to check the starter operation from under the bonnet. You can check for a feed from the fusebox at this same wire. No need to jack up.

I have not tried feeding pin two yet Wheeler but thanks for info.
I got up early this morning started the wife's car and thought I'd try the van it started, later I went to the fuel station it died a few times complete shut down all power gone and I bumped it while free wheeling which fired it back up...sounds like a poor connection but I've cleaned all earths and double checked the battery by tapping posts while running Incase their is a fault on the battery as the power just went out like a candle.
I put fuel in and went over to a mates to put his reader on and the list was endless I'm not even going to put them up but theirs some serious failure here for power to be cut completely for a second then back.
Anyway I took pictures of codes for auto electrician tomorrow thinking it might be ok and he wouldn't have codes but nope it threw a tantrum all the way home cutting out complete loss of power.
I don't know how I managed to get it back on the drive to be honest.
It wouldn't start again no crank antipollution on dash and my code reader won't read, now the main lights don't work but side lights do...no economy mode this time and fan heater not working.
I'm pretty sure it's the bsi under dash or bsm under bonnet (I think thats what they are called) for such a complete power failure like this.
Hopefully I'll find out tomorrow.
The under bonnet is easy to get to and I believe you can get the same serial and just swap them but the under dash bsi needs programing or you can get them repaired and coded etc.
I'm sticking with for now and I shall report my findings in the next few days, I'll keep bashing it with a french stick from tescos.
Cheers Mark

It could very well be a BSM failure, not unknown & often fail with symptoms like this. I would think far less likely to be a BSI failure, I don't think I've ever seen on fail with symptoms like this.

I hope it is the under bonnet one I will be happy to source one and fit it but my luck is non existent mate lol.
It cranked and started three times earlier and just cut out after a few seconds now it's not cranking, I should know more tomorrow wheeler.
It did similar years ago and it was that fuel rail pressure sensor on end under filter but it cranked all the time and just cut out and stalled then it would crank and crank and not run.....it said camshaft sensor earlier today and I was tempted to fit one but the initial no crank swayed me away from bothering and I thought the stalling may have thrown this code up, van pulled like a train and ticked over pretty good this morning so I'm finding it hard to condem the camshaft sensor but you never know.
Anyhows judgement day tomorrow I hope.

The camshaft sensor is only used for initial startup, it doesn’t use it for the running of the engine. If you unplug it when the engine is running the engine will stay running. I can think ive ever replaced a camshaft sensor on a PSA vehicle apart from physical damage to it after a timing belt failure.

So far .....
Suspected bsm not having coms with ecu but seen as it occasionally runs possibility it's the ecu.....hope not.
The guy checked all sorts did wiring checks from bsm to ecu, he's getting both parts and returning when he's got the parts to switch out.
Fingers crossed bsm, and he said even if it's ecu he's capable of flattening a secondhand unit and flashing it so we shall see.
