C4 Grand Picasso 6-speed auto not changing gears more than once.

Post by Ed81ie »

Hi,
My first post here.
160k km on the clock. 6-speed auto box (R, N, A, M)
Issue started just today. otherwise the box has been jerky when starting moving in 1st gear. was able to fix with gearbox reset. Lasted fine for few days, then started jerking again...

Now it changes gears just once after car is turned on. Drives fine in Automatic mode. When need to reverse, have to turn off ignition, restart the engine and only then it will change to reverse.
Same thing when need to go forward again.
When moving the lever, screen shortly shows correct change, but then reverts back to previous selection. Or when on Auto, trying to reverse - changes back to manual 1, and paddles not doing anything.
Last time when trying to switch from Reverse back to Auto, it staid in R and under pressure - could not let go brake pedal, as car would have moved. in 20-30 sek started to burn clutch. when ignition was turnd off, released pressure and activated handbrake.
What could be the cause, and would there be any easy fix? like BSI Reset or something similar?

Any chance there is a list of garages who would have Lexia diag tool in ROI?

Now drove by most local garages, all closed.
At 3 cross-roads out of 8, car stalled. Did not disengage clutch on time. Overall seemed slow changing down gears.
Finally after about 30 min driving, got an error on screen - "Antipollution system fault"
No loss of power or anything. Gear change seems just a bit slower at some stage... Neighbor commented something about car being noisier, like exhaust gone or damaged.

All this started yesterday with Low Fuel warning coming up. wife told that car was kind a jerky to drive. Like did not get enough fuel in. Although was showing that there is enough for 90km. Didn't feel that myself on 15 min drive. Added about 20 Liters, hoping it will clear the issue, if triggered by this, but no avail..

I wonder if it is trying to regenerate but failing. Presuming that it is a diesel of course.
If petrol, there have been some reports of poor performance with E10 petrol but E5 seems to be OK.

Pop the VIN up so I can see exactly what system you do and don't have.

VIN: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

First reading of codes:

Fault (4)
P1351 Preheating Relay Circuit Relay Supplied and Plugs Never Supplied - Permanent Fault
P0700 Gearbox ECU Poor Operation of the Automatic Gearbox / Piloted Manual Gearbox - Intermittent

(BSI)
05FF Unexpected Re-initialisation Fault Coming from The BSI - Not Characterised
098A Engine Relay Unit: Fault Front side Light - Open Circuit
098B Engine Fuse Box: Front ...
0F14 Windscreen Wiper Motor: Slave Motor Operating Fault - Characterised

Gearbox (2)
P0919 Gearbox Fault. The Gear Cannot Be Disengaged - Intermittent
P0925 Gearbox Fault. The Gear Does Not Engage - Intermittent

Engine Relay Unit (2)
098A Fault: Front Right Side Light - Open Circuit
098B Fault: Front Left Side Light - Open Circuit

Faults cleared, only side lights remained. Garage did not have any spare bulbs. So will sort that myself and will go back for second reading.
Gearbox issues still remain. At traffic lights first gear is not been released and burning clutch. When need to reverse after some driving, not releasing first gear to engage Reverse.
When starting and reversing first, then changes properly from R to N and to A.

P1351 seems to be a very common (almost universal) fault on the HDi engines. I have had it show up on all three C5s that I have owned, and they seem to manage perfectly well without that system, so you can almost certainly ignore THAT error code. However, I cannot offer any further help or advice, other than to see what the Moderators come up with.

Oh, :welc: to the Forum, by the way.

Today new surprise. Dropped gear at crossroads when stopping. Like was not able to change down fast enough and failed to engage 1st gear while at standstill.
While robot was trying to get in gear - switching between A1 and A2, car slightly moved and when reached about 5-8km/h was able to engage 1st gear and move on. In slightly uphill position it took about 2-3 min to get going.
Seems like no more daily driving - just to the garage and walk home....

This should give you a little more context to the faults. We'll ignore the P1351 as that's common to most HDIs regarding the glowplugs.

I think you really need to get this to the dealer, as you need somebody with experience of these awful systems - and as you can see the possibilities are too numerous to guess.
Fault Code: P0919
Description of Fault: Gearbox fault - The gear does not disengage: Not characterised.
Detection that the gear has not disengaged after 2 secs. This fault appears during a gear change in the gear disengagement phase and in the absence of fault codes P1586 ; P1587 ; P1724 ; P1726 ; P1731.
Conditions for Fault to clear: First successful gear engagement.
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Gear change deactivated
  • Automatic mode deactivated
  • Under-revving protection deactivated: Possibility of stalling of the engine (the gear cannot be disengaged)
  • If the vehicle has the Stop and Start system: Stop and start function deactivated
Symptoms:
  • Difficult/impossible to change gear
  • Lack of power
  • Timing
  • Absence of automatic stopping of the internal combustion engine
  • Leaks
Suspect Areas:
  • Gear engagement electrovalves
  • Gear engagement sensor
  • Pipes
  • Mechanical problem (Gear selection mechanism; Gear engagement fingers)
  • Gearbox mechanics (Internal control)
  • Gearbox ECU

Fault Code: P0925
Description of Fault: earbox fault - The gear does not engage : Not characterised.
Non-engagement of the gear requested at the end of 2 s (Not N). Gear change in progress (Engagement only). The fault will occur in the absence of fault codes P1586 - P1587 - P1724 - P1726 - P1731
Conditions for Fault to clear: After switching the ignition off and then back on
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Attempts at engaging the target gear and activation of manual mode (Gear change requests are then ignored).
  • In the event of a failure to engage the target gear
    - Emergency selection of neutral (Subsequent gear change requests are taken into account)
    - Automatic mode deactivated if engagement of target gear fails
  • In the event of failure after several attempts: Selection of neutral
  • If the vehicle has the Stop and Start system: Stop and start function deactivated
Symptoms:
  • Difficult/impossible to change a gear
  • Lack of power
  • Absence of automatic stopping of the internal combustion engine
  • Lighting of the engine autodiagnosis warning lamp
  • Starting problem
  • Timing
  • Leaks
Suspect Areas:
  • Clutch kit
  • Gear engagement sensor
  • Selection sensor
  • Electrical harness
  • Pipes
  • hydraulic valve block
  • Electro-pump
  • Pressure accumulator
  • Electrovalves
  • Piloted manual gearbox
  • Mechanical problem (Gear selection mechanism, Gear engagement fingers)
  • Gearbox mechanics (Internal control)
