Peugeot 3008 1.6 THP temperature issue

Post by jakes »

Can someone please give me a solution for my Peugeot 3008 1.6 THP, the temperature gauge jumps to red when the car starts and engine is still cold, this causes the fan to go on, this problem is intermittend, and only when the car is cold. Its a 2010 model, 1.6 156HP (5FV/5F02 / EP6CDT), with 142000km.
Thanks.

I think that you need to invest in a diagnostics session, there should be a stored fault code in the engine ECU.

The obvious suspect would be the temperature sensor (which may be integrated in the thermostat assembly, or may be separate), or the wiring to it.

Image

This photo shows two of 3 varieties of temperature sensor fitted to the engine, the thermostat housing at the top is generally the later version, with the brown sensor visible at the top left of the housing, the lower hosing in the picture shows the middle version with the temperature sensor screwed into the bleed hole, with an extra wiring harness to connect it back to the car (check that the flying connector is not loose or corroded). The early version is not shown here, but looks like the lower one, but the temperature sensor is integrated into the lower part of the housing and the extra wiring harness is not present.

Thank you very much for the answer xantia_v6, do you perhaps have a manual or procedure doc I can use to fit this part?

Jakes, the procedure for removing the thermostat can be found in the Haynes manual but as always the difficulty is easily underestimated. I find it a really painful job, and that is being polite. Not only is the thermostat difficult to access but the plastic coolant pipe that runs from the thermostat to the water pump around the back of the engine is really inaccessible. And yours by now will almost certainly be broken at the water pump end. Expect lots of hours of frustration or a considerable expense. It's your time or your money! Note also that in the photo of the two thermostats one of the heater pipes (the one pointing SE) is different in the later thermostat. This adds another layer of aggravation in fitting a replacement.

Thanks for the reply. I ordered the temperature sensor and think it might be less hassle to only replace this instead of the entire thermostat assembly. Is this actually possible/advisable to only replace the sensor? I also found procedure on the nomaallim site for replacement, hope its accurate.
Best.

I think you are on the right track just replacing the temperature sensor. And I think the Nomaallim site is excellent. Eventually the thermostat and or the rear pipe will leak but just put it off as long as possible.
