2004 Berlingo Canbus

Post by simplesimon »

I would like to fit a towbar and associated wiring to my 2004 Berlingo.

What is the easiest way I can determine for sure if I have a canbus system?

Thank you

Hi, and :welc: to the forum. Just post up the VIN so that a Moderator can look up your vehicle. The VIN will automatically be masked so only Moderators can read it.

Wow, Is it really as easy as that? Could a mod please confirm before I dig out the paperwork.

Thanks for the welcome

The Berlingo has been multiplexed since the late mk1 models around 2000 but only a basic VAN bus. The mk2 from around 2002 was fully multiplexed but with dual VAN & CAN bus.
The mk3 from around 2007 went full CAN.
Yours being a 2004 will have both VAN & CAN networks.

Citroen do a range of electrical wiring kits designed for specific models. Some have blown bulb notification units and some are 7 / 13 channel around the £100 mark if you haven't already bought one.

Thanks. I was hoping to just tap into the existing wiring at the rear light cluster, but it sounds like that may not be possible without a wiring kit suitable for canbus then?

No, I haven't bought anything yet. I'm not sure what I should be buying. It seems that long gone are the days of just connecting it up to the existing wiring without a clever box. Perhaps left to a professional

You might want to look at the proper kit that Citroen would use. This system would not only provide the trailer lighting, it would also let the car 'know' it was towing a trailer, and adapt the ABD (and, if you have it, the ESP) to compensate.

To be honest, I was after a cheap solution to tow a once a year event, but looks like that is no longer possible.

To rephrase the question then. Does anyone know how to wire up a towbar socket on a 2004 Berlingo?
